why is CWB not selling export feed barley

From a reliable source I found out that the current tenders for feed barley out of Vancouver are real and for susbstantial amounts of barley. My calculations put values mid point Alberta at around $3.70 per bushel. Speculation is the board is not sourcing this barley in an effort to discourage more slippage from the malt supplies. If true just another example of premiums lost to producers to cover other mistakes made by the board. Other suggestion is that there are likely substantial markets in California where barley premiums could be obtained because of high priced corn. All these raise questions as to who is being protected in this strong market. It would seem that grain producers are far down the list behind a number of end users.

    A valuable observation.

Interesting question. Phone your director and get back to us with his answer.

The board needs farmers to deliver into the pooled malt market so that they do not end up in the 02 03 situation where canadian maltsters got shorted and had to import 100,000 tons from Europe at a cost of 6.53 per bushel. Yes a big loss to western producers , the CWB should put that into their study. Open market would make are malt industry flourish and increase production. Dealing with a customer that cannot guarantee delivery sucks and hurts our malt industry.
