So people are saying that the sask land data base no longer states who is buying land in saskatchewan???? is it because the foreign ownership is being abused and whos benefiting from that? Most around here know for a fact at least in our area foreign ownership is way above whats being reported. But who checks this?? Gov checks itself??? Incredible that no one has investigated this when the land capital groups were involved because again sure seemed to be lots of ineligible buyers.

I wrote my MLA about this and he replied by basically washing his hands of the decision, saying that it is for the privacy protection.
We all know that the Farmland Security Board does not have the budget or man power to police all the land transactions going on in the province. By allowing this information of buyers/sellers available it was able to be policed by the people. With these new rules, it gives all the knowledge (power) to the lenders, appraisal or realty groups.
I suggest all producers contact their MLA and push them to overturn this recent decision as it does the local producer no favours.

When I started farming lots of land in our area was owned by non residents , mostly Americans. We rented land from an American company, they had an office in Davidson and were the best landlords you could ask for. Then the Prov govt brought in legislation against this and they were forced to sell. We were very sad to see them have to leave, the majority owners family would come for two weeks every summer and stay in town and take in any and all local events. We did end up purchasing the land we rented, of course at the peak of interest rates. On a side note my son was house shopping in Regina about 3 years ago. He found a house he really liked, got in a bit of bidding war with a family from China. Finally after upping his bid twice he said that’s it, of course the Chinese upped him once more. He told the owner that they could take his bid or sell to a unknown foreigner who was willing to pay 10000 more. Well money talks , a year later no one had still moved into that house . He was mad that they can’t buy farm land but can buy other real estate. It really isn’t fair .

Yes at the end of the day money talks , no doubt
we walked from 700 acres, knowing full well Monnette would outbid us
His bid was $1000 an acre more than anyone
can’t blame the seller , best money , but for us average joes , your screwed. We will not put 110 years of our farm at that kinda risk
put a few extra bucks into our own dirt if warranted
On a side note , my tile project worked far better than expected, a small win but 20 ac of extremely valuable land ready to Seed tomorrow for the first time in our farms history.Last edited by furrowtickler; May 18, 2024, 23:22.

Lots of money needing a safe home and farmland is one. Even if a chinaman takes a 25% haircut on the investment it is still 75% of something he got out of China. Not only that there are people from all over the world doing about the same. No problem if it’s people looking to move here. Around here there is a Chinese lady who bought some wells and sounds like a comedy of errors. Cousin was hauling fluid for another outfit with a head office largely empty with a secretary answering the phone, Chinese owned as well. He had trouble them paying.
Sometimes I lose my composure and think about the days of farm land ownership rules when they were more stringent and actually enforced. All those Alberta buggers had their customary half section and others put into other family members names but it kept a lid on things. If you wanted to own a bunch of ground here you may as well live here too and contribute. Now every asshat wannabe Alberta BTO who’s buggered things up at home wants to spread their stench across the border.
