Friday Crop Report on a Thursday Week 13

Reminds me of 92. Finished at U of S and decided farming would be fun. Bought some land and went atter. That year it froze in August. Shitty fall so didn’t finish harvest til late October. Crops were average to below avg depending on crop type. Next year started out early and drier. BUT she went down hill from there. Cold and cloudy then the rain started and didn’t quit til October. 37 inches later the crop came off. What there was of it. 16 bushel wheat. 8 bushel canola. Peas were 2-3. Oats was better. Around 100. It snowed that year on September 12-13 I think and not a skiff. She was a full on foot of heavy wet shit. Oats were flat as piss on a platter everything else was so crappy it didn’t matter. I think those 2 years traumatized me for the last 31-32 of my farming life. What goes around comes around. Just hope I never see a 93 again.
Crestliner on the GDD day thing we are behind almost 300 from last year but slightly ahead of our longer term average. Only because we seeded so early. Hope she warms up to normal at least.

yes those early years and 2000 to 2005 taught me to be very cautious at crop potential and farming now
maybe too cautious compared to others but still plugging along here. Raised a family and they on there own path now too

Sprayed in mud today, mud is a dud as always. We are losing acres each rain now but the further north you go the wetter it gets.

Visions of the flood years. So far most of our land is doing ok.

92 was cold and dry 93 was cold and wet with everything flooded out. Both years the alfalfa seed fields were burnt off in the spring because there was no seed.
The after affects of a big volcano that spewed a big ash cloud over North America.
Did I miss hearing about a volcano last winter?
Canada day long weekend in 93 rained about 7-8 inches.
Canada day long weekend in 02 was dry and the temps that weekend went up to 36-37 and finished the crop. August of that year it started raining and second growth took off. Combined until close to Christmas.

We’ve had 6 inches since April 25, just the right amount amount. Crops look good …. Too bad prices are in the toilet.

No kidding about grain prices.

Here are some historical references to farming as well.
Fuel use to be 50 cents a litre.
Trucks use to cost 35k.
Tractors and combines use to be under 180k.
etc etc

Give me historical input costs with historical grain prices and maybe 8.15 durum makes sense. Explain that to them and they will start talking about yield.

And don't forget we get to pass all the new costs on to the consumer. ( sarcasm )

Long as guys keeping spending the millions the manufacturers and stealerships will keep on making and selling.
There will be a lot of long faces come fall if prices down turn around with high expensed leveraged farms.

Wheat is growing nice now , restored that MF a few years back ,only British built 178 i have ever seen here , gave her a run out today , started tractor driving on one of them

Them green sprayers need a couple on hand in case they breakdown, red ones more reliable. Putting on our skinnies on today, should be fun dodging water holes doing our fungicides.
