Friday Crop Report on a Thursday Week 17

Ah, the heat is bringing in the crop but guess what it's also taking yield because a wet June created shallow roots that now need to grow down for moisture and can't in this heat.

Hot day again but maybe some may catch the odd shower, we had 1/10 of a 1/10 yesterday morning that only cooled down the plants.

Indian Head North is a sweet spot worth the drive. Canary seed like I've never seen. Thick.

Jasper fire isn't climate change it's useless fools that don't get forest management. Cut lines work, clearing areas work. Green Jesus is stupid and to blame for this whole shit show. I was going to Jasper for a holiday next week. It's ****ed now.

Crop report.

Hrs and Durum, the early is filling and some light spots show plant mass is getting thinner. Rest is doing ok and still doing good. One more rain would be great. Exhibition week next week in Regina it's a crop maker if we get rain.

Barley, the early is filling and colour change is happening, not white but golden so still moisture to fill. The later seeded could have a lower yield as heat is taking grain.

Oats look good so far but another week of heat will hurt.

Flax is flowering or just finished looking tall and good still.

Peas are done flowering and filling, some early are showing signs of turning.

Lentils are filling.

Canola is the one crop that needs a big drink, it doesn't like days over 28 and doesn't do well at 35. I expect a trimming of yield provincially by a couple of mill tons. If You caught a shower it's hanging on and will fill.

So its real simple another week of heat will push this crop to catch up but will also take yield to get that result.

Have a great weekend im off to southern Sask then over to Bc, Redeer Drumheller sand hills and home.

Park the sprayer its time to quit helping this crop.

Cat a steering hose and seal in oil pumps.

Track hoe front idler rebuild.

Combines are in town and will be done and ready next week

Grain cart got a gearbox change out.

Canola will be single digits

Cereals who knows, likely light weight. Some are talking cutting for green feed. Head stuck in the boot in barley.

They always called durum “desert” durum well the name fits the bill, problem is it’s one of the worst crops in the desert this yr. Flag leaf has turned orange.

Prices will continue to fall. Some guys have monsters and they are letting the world know it. Arrogance is a terrible thing.

Corn is getting ahead of water now with this heat and is turning dark green instead of yellow. Canola is finishing up with still yellow patches in low spots. Oats and barley look good and greenfeed should be ready to cut next week. Reshingled my house after spring winds it was due . 30 c temps sure helps them set think that will be the last time I will be working on that roof. Son working on combine while we visit grandkids out west and wife already got money back from Jasper hotel booking.

Whats something to see between the Columbia ice fields to RedDeer and Drumheller

Yields are going to be extremely hard to estimate this year with 5-8% of our land lost to flooding, and now the how they handle the heat is extremely hard to tell until its in the bin. We seem to be really good at growing straw. Such a weird year with flooding, and now what looks like a touch of drought. The soil moisture probe shows no moisture in the top 10 cm and pulling water from 30 cm. Good moisture below 30cm. Barley is starting to get that white tinge to it, changing colour sooner than I would have thought for how late it headed, so hopefully there is more than just straw. Canola looks kind of surprisingly ugly coming out of flower, not really sure what to make of it, hopefully just the ugly duckling stage. Got some satellite imagery from climate fieldview to make a fungicide map for the peas and 15% was flooded out, so even if the yields are phenomenal on the rest, best we could hope for is an average crop.

I do use fieldview for data aggregation with a few different colours on the farm, makes it easy. Their rainfall maps seem to be surprisingly accurate, matches well with my in field weather stations.

Anyone else get F'd by LSM grain. I had sold barley through LSM commodities, and put a hold on loading any more loads until I get paid. LSM grain got their bond pulled by CGC, and LSM commodities never had one, same owner for both companies. Talked to a guy at CGC and he said their books are a mess with funneling money between companies. I'm out $60,000 if I don't get paid, and I hope others are more fortunate. I think I may be done with brokers. 2nd time I got f'd.

Depending on your timing the Pioneer Acres show at Irricanna would be right up your alley. I think its Aug 9 to 11 this year, you can go anytime to the museum but the show is amazing for antique trucks, tractors and horse drawn equipment.

There is another fire out of control that has closed a large area of backcountry that is usually nice to explore.

We've had only one rain event since the end of May here, June was windy and July hot, cereals were looking good a month ago, lots of white spots and leaves drying off now, short and patchy, canola never looked good, pretty well done flowering ranging from below average to "what was seeded there". Hay was all over the map but below average, won't be a second cut. Cows running out of grass fast, no regrowth once grazed. Today finally cooler but no rain, yet anyhow. Not sure what to expect come fall, rain could still help but not looking likely and for the most part yields are capped and declining fast daily.

Had some wheat badly yellowed with a new broadleaf herbicide. Can't name names just yet. No yield loss they said. Dealer had others in its network as well. Turning frickin brown now. 480 acres worth. Maybe I'll get a free hat.
I've always hated brokers. They serve a purpose but are a pia. I avoid them unless no choice.
Not getting any measurable rain nor does it look like we will. Watch it open up end of August lol.
Amusing to wonder how long I'll have to farm to be back in the cash position I was in last fall lol.

One Steiger getting hinge pins and bushings done now. The other will need a diff this winter. Combine and header almost ready. Sprayer maintenance never ends. Maybe I'll leave the place for a bit next year?

I'll start with my own crops.

Early seeded canola is done flowering. That's the earliest that has ever happened, don't think that is a good sign. Never really did look densely yellow. Haven't seen any significant blanks or aborted flowers.
Later seeded, which almost had to start from scratch after the multiple frosts in mid to late June followed by flea beetles is finally in full flower. Stands are thin and patchy, but looks promising from a distance, in spite of being so hot and dry. Needed rain yesterday, but in spite of rain in the forecast yesterday and today, we have received 0.05 of an inch. Anything sitting on top of gravel has already given up completely. Expect those areas will grow quickly now that we have missed any chances of rain.
Have some canola further east that missed the rain event at the end of June, it is ugly. Never really reached full flower.
Only really good news is that I have less canola acres than usual, and there are almost no drowned out areas.

Wheat on the other hand is looking best ever. Very little leaf disease. Has handled the hot and dry remarkably well. Was very late due to the cool dry weather all spring catching up fast with all this heat.
I only have 60 acres of barley this year. And it was seeded last, on lighter land. But is holding up very well so far. First time growing Esma, had my doubts that a dwarf variety would produce well on a dry ear. Hoping to be proven wrong

I tried to seed some lowland pastures down to hay this spring. The type of ground that normally has standing water half the year. Stayed so dry after seeding that almost nothing germinated until well into july. I'm not sure if some germinated and died or if it is still waiting. Won't produce much this year.

For the first time ever this year, we don't have any tame hay to put up. I have hayed some lowland pasture that got ahead of itself. Great weather for putting up hay. Very good yield for pasture.

Heavy clay and high water table to the rescue this year again. The water level in a water well this morning is four feet below grade. Too bad that same water table ends up being above grade on a wet year and drowns everything out.
