Friday Crop report on a Thursday. Week 20

Good morning we squeaked out 3/4 of an inch of rain Wednesday morning. Won't help much but will help later seeded fill nicely. Damage has been done in July and you can't get it back but it will now stabilize the crop and bring it in faster.

Some reports of 1.5 to 2.5 in south and west of us.

Overall I will say the cereal crop will be above most farmers' crop insurance guarantee canola some areas won't come close. Lentils stand looks excellent but really not that massive amount of seeds to match. Peas seeded early great, flood-damaged never really recovered. Rest average.

Crop report.

Hrs and Durum, some early spraying has started so in 14 days harvest will begin on early seeded wheat and durum. Later is still about 10 days away. Cereals look ok but have blank spots in the head. Durum has lodged bad this year.

Flax looks good and rain will help.

Peas and lentils are sprayed and guys are just starting to harvest or waiting a few more days. Yields are ok but nothing massive.

Barley, early seeded fields are either going to be swath and taken in 3 to 5 days or guys are straight cutting between rain events.

Oats early are turning but heat took yield, later seeded looks ok and some late seeded for greenfeed is not great.

Canary, early seeded with lots of groceries looks good, later seeded not so much.

Canola is all over the map but the heat definitely took yield. Some fields are worse than others, one shower at the right time and it's ok. Missed one and it's not. Saskatchewan,

Carry out that the crushers like to bullshit us that they are full till Christmas is piss all.

Hay crop, second cut will be minimal this year. First cut was good but not as great as last year. Frost in June hurt.

Pastures are ok but need a rain or three.

Overall very few areas with bread loaf canola crops. Cereals came through better, pulse crop is a 60 mph crop but once in not as good.

Some canola this year has sunburn and might fool guys into thinking it's ready to swath.

Yields are going to vary the widest in history here , depending on seeding date , fertility, disease , weed control and showers. Seeding date being number one .
There will be a few 90 bus Barley crops and more 30
There will be a few 70 bus wheat crops and more 25 chicken feed
There will be a few 50 bus canola crops and more 20 pepper
all within the same rainfall zone here .
All could have been very good
Grain quality will be the sticker now as other members on here have stated with very poor early harvest reports . Off grade and feed will not even pay bills on most farms this year
Was wet enough in June for sclero to set in bad on canola fields not sprayed . Yield loss will be large from disease for the first time in years here.
This was considered a very good pocket but literally no meaningful rain in July and the tank went empty especially on lighter soils .

Yields haven’t been awful. More surprises on the high end than the low end. High being relative - nothing is great.

Peas sounds like 30-40 bushels for the most part. Quality is good.

Barley I’ve been hearing ~80, quality is NOT good. This is the leader of the junk so far. Seen 1 sample that would pass last years malt demands so far.

What is very odd here is that peas seemed to have handled the heat better than other crops . Not sure about late seeded peas , my guess they are not good at all

Only lentils coming off here, yield is average crop -around 1200 pounds. Crops look good from the road because a lot early seeded but the dry heat must have taken bushels. We’ll see in the next 2 weeks. If we can put it in the bin dry, it’ll be a bonus.

That said, peas are even more miserable with all this smoke... fluffy and friggin sticky on account of dew. Seems you get maybe 5 decent hours of combining, and maybe 7 if you're willing to work around slip clutches and buzzers howling? 100% humidity for something like 7 hours last night. Takes until just after lunch before you can reliably feed it up the front end without plugging, then you're screwed again just shortly after supper. Sunset might as well be 7pm here right now.

Crop is starting to ripen up and surprise surprise the weather has turned damp and cool. Crop fought back from the summer flooding to look respectable but delayed maturity in the flooded areas has made the crop uneven which will complicate harvest.

Drew has eastern Sask getting wetter as we get more into fall. Ordered propane already just in case. I hate harvesting in snow. Out to spray reglone after supper on last peas so about 10 should be done. Some early wheat maybe on Saturday will get sprayed.

Went on a parts run yesterday and took the gravel for a lot of it. Drove through areas where the $100 plus rent is the norm. Saw more fields of sub 30bu canola than ones that could surpass 30 bu. Also a quite a few miles of 20bu canola. And that’s not taking into account pods that obviously will be aborting in the heat. Cereals look ok from the road, but how did they fill and what will the quality be? Lentils and peas look average to me or below.
