Well, another one bites the dust. Purely grains can't pay its bills. Over my 45-year farming career, I have been burnt twice. Not this time. It sucks big time.
Barley is off before the rains, peas were done yesterday and now we wait as today looks wet. Not stupid wet but wet.
Crop report.
15% of the Saskatchewan harvest is done, if you are finished it was a shitty crop if you're not going it's probably really good. Being ahead of the average like they will try to spin it for the public isn't usually a good thing.
The peas and lentil harvest is wrapping up. Lentils are not yielding as the fields look. Peas are doing better but fell flat the last few rains and were slow going. Peas did yield ok for this year and seemed to not be affected by the high heat in July. Deep-rooted and maybe done flowering before it hit. Our yield was off from our best but with a high locked-in price will do ok. Flood damage did more as all low areas had nothing.
The Barley harvest is almost all done some standing and swath still left to go. Anything off before all the rain events looks good heavy and plump. I feel lots will be feed. Late barley and green feed is liking the rain if frost stays away.
Hrs and Durum are getting sprayed now and the wait begins. Early April seeded is just coming off or just ready after today's rain. The fields look good but I don't believe it will be last year's Good crop. Durum fields are lodged and twisted and thick. Heads didn't fill to potential in the July heat. Only heard one early result 65. That's off from last year for our area.
Canary is sprayed or will be soon. If you gave it the groceries it looks good. If you didn't not great.
Flax is turning and spraying will soon happen or swath.
Canola is the wild card. Later looks better but still green. Early is getting swath or sprayed. Bad areas in the field show signs of poor podding. It's not 2023 really great crop that's for sure. It will be an average to maybe below for our area. They can take the satellite July estimating and shove it up their ass.
Pastures like the rain every week and hay fields perked right back up.
So to sum it up. Most are spraying to shut fields down. Lots are finishing the lentil pea barley harvest. Some fall tillage and harrowing are taking place, and we wait.
To all the plane and chopper fall spraying there is a reason the big dogs own tons of ground rigs and tram lines. Look at fields sprayed with the latter last fall. Kocia, thistle and more weeds. Coverage isn't the same. Yes, they use a calculator that shows I would spend $300,000.00 for two apps and my tramping costs me $150,000.00 but I can use the $150,000.00 and buy another sprayer and pay a guy to do the work. Oh missed areas in the field and the killing of trees. In a pinch and wet years, you have to use.
Observation so far for tests in 2024.
Crop Aid does something, soil mellow and roots better. Heavier test weight and seemed to take minor drought better. Year three.
Green lighting is real and is a useful form of nitrogen. Maybe not a replacement but better than adding other products at heading for protein and full flowering for bigger pods. Results from the weigh wagon coming later this fall.
So where are others at and who is done? Heavy fall rain in dry areas is a good thing to fill the tank for 2025.
Stay safe.
