Good morning we were shut down early yesterday due to a shower or three that went through our area.
We just hit the 25% done stage and are spraying the last few sections of later-seeded canola.
Crop report.
Lentil harvest is finally done. Yields are down from other years they didn't like the really hot July after a wet June. That's a common theme for most crops.
Peas are also part of the finished club as most seed peas first. Yields lower than last year but respectful. Anyone who locked $12 had a good year.
Barley is the other in the finished club except for feed and green feed. Yields are down from last year but our samples just came back and it's malt. Heavy nice and piss all chitted.
Wheat and Durum harvest is in full swing in our area. Early results are lower than last year by 20%. The first wheat of ours harvested is graded a 1, 15.9 protein and weighing 67.8 lbs. Some lighter in the area so they need to mix. Hearing trouble in wheat with lighter samples. Is it Crop Aid, Green Lightning, Last N or To Wet two past years or just not sure. Mist wheats are lodged in the area so slower going.
Early Durum seeded by new BTO is getting ha looks painfully slow going. Welcome to the north.
Flax is getting shut down. I don't think anyone swaths anymore. Harvest will begin in ten days.
Oats in some early fields are harvested and later are in swaths or just waiting to dry down. Not sure about yields but it looks lower than the last few.
Canola is the one crop no one has started to harvest and all are saying it's no bumper and not close to last year's record yields for our area. Heat the cooked slot of the crop. I'm guessing 1/3 less than last year or hoping it's only a 1/3 less. Canola has problems with plant breeding programs as it can't handle hot days in July, and it isn't recovering at night. Acres will be down in 2025 with seed costs out of control and shitty varieties not living up to the hype.
Pastures are doing ok with August rains returning but it's the end of summer.
No one is doing a second cut it seems as first was big enough.
The late-seeded green feed looks better now that we had August rains.
So in a nutshell its full on harvest mode in our area, yields are decent but no bumper and we are all happy and grateful with what we have considering the year.
What are others seeing?
