Looks like AB ministers and livestock groups finally speaking on 293.

“Farming is woven into the fabric of our national identity, with modern livestock agriculture playing a vital role,” said a statement from Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson. “Bill C-293, however, goes so far as to pick winners and losers within the agriculture sector, with potentially wide-reaching, catastrophically damaging regulations and restriction of commercial freedoms for agricultural producers and processors.” In a news release, the (https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=9122682AD1489-FDDB-2EED-C6F483E429D32017) province said one of the bill’s most alarming aspects is the “discretionary power it would grant to officials to shut down agricultural facilities without clear, objective criteria.”

C-293 has some of the most omnipotent language I've seen in a Bill or an Act. Now it is at second reading in the Senate. This for a bill that two months ago, was dismissed by some ag associations as ..." Private Members Bills never get passed." There are people with zero ties to agriculture that are working their as/s off to wake people up while elected officials in Ag areas are silent. Kudos to Sigurdson on the release.

What I find amazing is a lawyer from Ontario: Lisa Miron has been the lead organizer identifying the negative impact of this bill on agriculture and Canadians. The list of presenters in Ottawa opposed to Bill C 293 is void of ag associations we pay check offs to.

And a professor from Dalhousie breaks the bill public, the very same day as he became aware of it!

https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/charlebois-is-bill-c-293-canadas-vegan-act

This bill assumes ONE HEALTH control over everything and ties climate, and pandemic to agriculture. The impact on our society is a removal of our sovereignty.

Please step up for your industry now and help inform all Canadians of the peril of allowing unelected bodies with international influence to govern.

What this clearly illustrates is the lack of representation by our ag associations in pushing back a bill that is now in 2nd reading in the Senate, having sailed through 3 reading in the house without even alerting a farmer or the public: the absence of their voice is more atrocious that the fascist bill in itself.

With annual meetings coming up, let us insist that C 293 is on every agenda. The intent of this bill in one that needs to be clearly analyzed and understood by the agriculture industry.

And perhaps a hearty discussion on why Beef and Commodities and the environment are interdependent value chains. Afterall, DDGs, Oilseed Meal, and by products like starch and pulp require the ruminant to consume.

This is not the first occasion to illustrate the void of representation in policy. It appears not the last.
Not to the same scale of ominous, but remember the Code of Practice fiasco? Supported by all orgs. Couldn't understand the pushback.
The tin hat crowd won a short reprieve but did nothing to alter the mandates of our representatives. I suspect the same here.
Until you clearly separate policy from all other issues and give it it's own mandate and budget nothing will change.

The push for less beef consumption is more and more evident in the world today.
Bill C 293 will become a tool of this intention by the new approach to food systems, which includes factory production of printed meat and bug protein.

The CBC says it's just Alberta playing politics:

Alberta government's concerns about federal pandemic bill reflect conspiracy theories, MRU

"
Asked what he would say in response to Alberta farmers who are concerned about the wording of the bill, Erskine-Smith said "you are not causing disproportionate risk, so you shouldn't worry at all about that particular section."

He added "when it comes to regulating activities, Canada already has really strong rules in place... This is not opposition to the industry, this is about making sure we manage and reduce risks."

As for the regulation of commercial activities outlined in the bill, Erskine-Smith said his intention was to make certain rules around bio-security in the agriculture sector mandatory, rather than voluntary.

"If 'assess' is the right language rather than 'regulate,' have at it," he said. "The Senate has the power to make these changes and to make sure they fine-tune the language of the bill to get it right. That makes perfect sense to me."

Makes perfect sense to him, being a vegan activist.

Erskine-Smith s'plainin that any opposition to his bill is just conspiracy theory.

Sent to the senate.

He says nothing scary about it.

Basically saying "Don't worry because that's not what I meant"?
But most current forms of animal agriculture are not acceptable to him.

Very, very scary.

Don't you feel so much safer with Erskine-Smith deciding what risks are real or not and defining what he really meant.

Is anyone else sick and tired of this whole liberal ideology that if they get called out in any form or fashion it’s a conspiracy theory?

next thing will be that it is the Russians behind disinformation on bill 293

That was pre Covid language.

Bill C-293

Bill C-293, An Act respecting pandemic prevention and preparedness (https://abpdaily.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c1f6a7e3d460ed7f2ff6e92fc&id=0d696553a0&e= 37cb5a9cca) is in its second reading in Senate. While Alberta Beef Producers supports the overall objective of pandemic preparedness, we are disappointed in the current wording.

On Oct 24, ABP Vice Chair Doug Roxburgh joined Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange, Alberta Chicken Producers, and Alberta Pork to speak in response to the bill. We are urging the Senate of Canada to amend the bill to reflect a balanced and fair approach that doesn't unfairly target animal agriculture.

Bill C-282

Bill C-282, An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) (https://abpdaily.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c1f6a7e3d460ed7f2ff6e92fc&id=ec795057c8&e= 37cb5a9cca), is currently at consideration in committee in the Senate.

On Oct 8, ABP, Alberta Pork, Alberta Cattle Feeders' Association, and Team Alberta Crops sent a letter (https://abpdaily.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c1f6a7e3d460ed7f2ff6e92fc&id=21ff924a92&e= 37cb5a9cca) to Matt Jones, Minister of Alberta Jobs, Economy, and Trade.

Following a rally in support of the bill on Oct 10, British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association, Alberta Beef Producers, Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, Manitoba Beef Producers, Beef Farmers of Ontario, New Brunswick Cattle Producers, Nova Scotia Cattle Producers, and Prince Edward Island Cattle Producers, released a joint statement (https://abpdaily.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c1f6a7e3d460ed7f2ff6e92fc&id=a0a0f9f946&e= 37cb5a9cca) expressing our disappointment.
On Oct 23, Canadian Cattle Association President Nathan Phinney joined the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade to witness Bill C-282.
