If the Senate stalls the duly elected house we will have a constitutional crisis.
We need one, the constitution of Canada requires change.

    PMO has too many powers.
We need an elected, equal, and effective Senate, not an appointed lap dog.

      Digging up bones.

Wasn't that why the Reform Party was started, which eventually after a name change and joining the PC's became the CPC.

Harper had his chance to change the Senate, but appointted Mike Duffy and Patrick Barzeau to it when he was PM.. Why?

      Maybe PP?

Vicki you'd better pull out your old Reform lawn signs next election.

Lol, wish I could foragefarmer, wish I could!

The Triple E Senate birthed the RPC and the slogan:
        The West Wants In.

Indeed the west needs a power balance more than ever.

Lots of great ideas that addressed a constitution that enabled colonialism entirely, still does. More complicated today as the rural urban divide is more pronounced than ever it was.

Yes it would be nice if the west had a voting block, and had never merged.

As to the actions of PM Stephen Harper & appointments, he left unappointed judges and Senate seats, most still ask why?

Can healthy food save the planet?

Lower beef. Less Meat. Less grain is required. More factory food necessary.

            Wakey. Wakey.

              ---------------------------------------------------

Not for lack of trying. In June 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Government introduces the Senate Reform Act — a two-part bill that proposes nine-year term limits for Senators and creates a framework for provinces and territories to elect Senate nominees for the Prime Minister to consider. The Government of Quebec challenges the validity of the bill at the province’s Court of Appeal. The federal Government later asks the Supreme Court of Canada to examine the constitutional requirements of Senate reform.

April 25, 2014 - In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court rules that Senate reform proposals by the Harper Government — including instituting term limits for Senators and transforming the Senate into an elected chamber — require the approval of at least two-thirds of provincial legislatures, representing at least 50 per cent of the Canadian population. The ruling further details that Senate abolition would require the unanimous consent of the Senate, the House of Commons and all provincial legislatures.

So, in other words, it's hopeless.

And Poilievre won't get a single thing through the "liberal" heavy senate.

              We need a constitutional crisis.

I agree, Littledoggie, but somewhere on the bus, PM Harper moved to appoint Senators who did not even reside in the province of representation and failed to fill his quote at the end of this term.

Bring on the Constitutional crisis. It is 139 years overdue.

The last attempt at regional representation in Canada was in 1885 when the Metis and the First Nations protested their treatment. We may have another chance to knock on the door of Canada and request changes.

If you look at the list of grievances Louis Riel sent to Ottawa it would read much the same today.
The farmers at the time were supporters as it was already set up to funnel the profits to the east.

He was a western Canadian hero but we are taught that hanging him was a big important event in our history.

British military ran the whole deal.

                    True.
Colonialism is as alive and well today as it was when they hung Louis Riel and eight Chiefs in Battleford without a fair trial with the children hauled out of school to witness it, failed to distribute the 1.3 million acres promised the Metis in the negotiation with the Provisional government, tossed the First Nations on reserves and threw away the key.

                    Colonialism needs a constitutional crisis.

And now, everyone in western Canada should be able to see it for what it is: a top heavy central government with zero checks and balances.

Indeed, it was the message in 1885 too.

What is shocking to most in 2024 to the average Western Canadian is the fact that the same Colonialism that destroyed the Indigenous culture in Western Canada then is now working to deliberately disrupt the economic foundations we built: resource-based wealth.

I expect Post-National Canada will not be even less fun.
