The idea of diverting the flow of water is nothing new. Some time ago when we were driving to Helena Montana we stopped at an outcropping with a point of interest plaque near Fort Benton. The plaque marked the point at which the US marine core(1800’s) had diverted the Missouri River from turning north and entering Canada to heading south toward Great Falls and Helena. (I am presuming that the Missouri originally cut through Canada with shipping moving northward toward Drumheller.) The enduring affect of this diversion was massive and changed the face and macro climate of the dry South Alberta. It is possible that this historical event is a bigger item in Southern Alberta. It would be very interesting to follow this up. If anyone knows any more information about this massive historical event, please add to this comment.

I'm not sure what scheme the plaque was referring to sumdg. The Missouri starts near Three Forks southeast of Helena and flows north to Great Falls and then mostly east. Some of my ancestors rode a paddlewheeler up the river to Ft. Benton and then came overland to southern Alberta. Don't think there was ever a time that the Missouri didn't find its way to St Louis on the south side of the 49th. The Milk river which is a tributary flows into and out of Alberta. Also further west the St Mary river flows into Alberta and is the major source of water for irrigation from Lethbridge east to Medicine Hat. Also there is presently no way to get Canadian water to California except by truck.
