Yup, I'm sure trump would be doing it for the benefit of Canadian farmers. trump and his buddies exploit, pillage and move on. If he tried it, other Americans would have him in court for a century challenging it on constitutional grounds. Professional associations would be trying to disqualify Canadian professionals. Keep dreaming.

I find this all ridiculous. From my understanding the tact that Trump is taking is "classic Trump". Why everyone is rushing out and making statements trying to counter the outlandish statements is pointless. I see someone who see's a weak country from the antics of a out going Trudeau and see's an opportunity. It's my understanding that our trade imbalance with the US is largely due to oil and gas. Cut it off and the US consumer pays more and they have to us more middle eastern oil, not something they want. Over 75% of the potash US farmers use currently comes from Canada (Sask).
If it does come to pass that there is tariffs that the US puts on then I hope and expect that Canada puts tariffs of their own that US industries and consumers feel quickly. There is no need and no point to bad mouthing anyone in the media other than sending the proper negotiators to fix this. The few out there who want a mega US are going to make their voices heard but for me a better economic union would be a great win. Think of a North American version of a Euro, and the type of cooperation that the European Union enjoys. I think it would be able to avoid some of the pitfalls and mistake the the EU has had to work through.

Have seen it claimed that a 25% tariff on Canadian oil would raise prices at the pump by $1 a gallon.
Elections are won and lost on the price of gas .
Never happen. Zero chance for that one.
So no across the board.
All a negotiation.
We already have a starting agreement.

The US might not tariff oil and gas or potash or electricity coming from Canada, but might be a good thing for Canada if we tariffed those commodities ourselves as a counter tariff on our own commodities. If they need it, they can pay up. And put a tariff on US corn and other grains moving north. We don’t need their grain in here, we got lots. Wouldn’t take the US long to smarten up when they start running out of fuel and oil and start rolling blackouts in the NE States. Meanwhile our fuel and potash prices would go down due to oversupply. Barley prices and feed wheat prices would go up. Good for farmers. Works for me.

Doing quite well today as they are out walking the dogs past our place every morning.
The negotiations with Canada will likely become more engaging with Premier Danielle Smith at the helm. Let us hope that Sk. & NL continue to support the renegotiation of the equalization formula. They all ask for an Equal, elected, and Effective Senate to create a check and balance in Ottawa. They also demand a redistribution of PMO powers to include provinces, which would also be an ideal start.

Meanwhile, while everyone is fussing over what Trump said, keep a close eye on a liberal leadership race. (If there actually is one) Special interest groups can easily install their preferred candidate because to cast your vote for the next leader of the LPC you only have to be 14 years old and temporarily reside in this country. 5 million temporary foreign workers and students, whose visas are expected to expire by the end of the year, are expected to just go home.

I know the majority of citizens did.
It's fair to say that Harper departed from the Reform Party blue book measures he helped to create before he was elected PMO. Indeed, the record shows how that ended!
The blue book had recommended Parliamentary reforms (hence the name Reform Party)
which were intended to address the demand: "The West Wants In." The list included checks and balances like Senate Reform, free votes, and redistribution of the PMO's powers.
Premier Brad Wall was right to ask, like Premier Clyde Wells and Premier Don Getty before; regrettably, Premier Grant Devine was never on the list. However, for this to be different today, we will need the majority of Premiers to address the need for Constitutional reform to create a better functioning nation for the future.
Indeed, the ball will be in the Premier's court, as no PMO will willingly consent to reduced powers.
Hope springs eternal!
And yes, we should all demand our Premiers to do this. The Confederation of 1867 never included the majority of provinces in the negotiation. It is time to address this issue.Last edited by westernvicki; Jan 8, 2025, 18:06.

What this country needs is a referendum on a Triple E senate.
Let the people decide, for we know the politicians will never agree.
If eastern Canada votes yes then we implement it effective yesterday and build a nation, if they vote no, then the West leaves and build its own great nation!

Borders of this continent should have been drawn north/south not east/west.
Washington, and Oregon are just like BC, a big city that votes far left, with the remainder of the states going the complete opposite direction. There is a concerted effort to unite the rural areas of Washington, Oregon and Idaho without Portland and Seattle.
As for borders running on the wrong axis, every single province in Canada does more trade with the US, than with the rest of Canada. Geography runs north south, voting patterns run north south.Last edited by AlbertaFarmer5; Jan 8, 2025, 23:32.
