Keystone xl is meant to get Canadian oil to the Gulf of Mexico so it is in an export position or perhaps those coastal refineries buy some as they are tooled to heavy oil. Think what has happened the mid west refineries a good portion of Canadian oil is shipped to now has been tooled to take heavy oil. No real desire for keystone because of that. Far as Americans not needing our oil they don’t have an abundance of diesel or jet fuel fraction falling out of their oil. Makes great gasoline though. Our oil has low paraffins and makes great diesel and asphalt. Besides, western Canada select can be had at a fairly heavy discount to west Texas, and infrastructure is there to get to mid point USA at a competitive cost comparable to Texas.

The main reason Trump wants to put the 25% tariff on Canada is, he thinks the trade deficit the US has with Canada amounts to the US subsidizing Canada.

Trump throws out the amount of the subsidy (US trade deficit) as $200 billion when in reality the trade deficit only favoured Canada by $40 billion in 2023.

How can any body negotiate with Trump when he pulls numbers out of his ass.

What a S##t show !
Its sad really that there is such potential for Trump to right some wrongs and turn the ship around from bad policy. Hopefully he will tone it down a little and everyone reach a consensus. Its true that we as Canadian need to show more independence with better border controls. How Trudeau could phrase Roxham Road as a "irregular" border crossing is lunacy and complete with the RCMP there ready to carry the luggage of illegal migrants walking across the border. We caused that, we need to fix it. We know that we have needed to upgrade the military for years, we need to fix it.
If these tariffs start from the US on Feb 1, then we have to stand up for ourselves even its gonna hurt in meantime or we will never stand on our own again.
Its been said again and again how most of what goes US side is raw and goes though US labor for processing, while what Canada buys from the US is mostly goods processed with US labor.
I believe that until we have a change in gov't in Ottawa that things are going to stay bad cause they are seen by Trump as weak and a pushover.

If tariffs are necessary to push American producers to increase production when oil is an internationally traded commodity with a defined price. Though this is the best kick in the ass for Canada to grow up and start taking care of itself.

There are projections that 30% of all jobs will be lost to AI within 3 years. I believe it has already begun. I can see it. We use AI for legal, medical, etc.

This is likely considered for tightening immigration.
