Carney at the Oilers. 100% tariffs on Canola Oil etc from China.

Today, Carney skated with the oilers.
Today, 100% tariffs were implemented on Canola oil, and meal, and peas to China.

Be sure to check the National news and the front pages of the newspapers to see if any media bothered to cover the billion-dollar losses and jobs threatened by the tariffs. Or if they just covered Carney at the oilers, which is a great decoy indeed.

I bet not one journalist asked him a question on the tariffs. In fact this issue is almost 100% ignored in Ottawa and by mainstream media.

So yesterday I asked the farm associations to take out full page adds in every city: talk about the impact of the 100% tariffs on western Canada. How it will impact the crush industry, the viability of the plant based protein sector. The sustainable rotation which is environmentally friendly.

At this time no one has bothered to even respond to the idea!

Since no one is informing the public about what is happening on western Canadian farms we need to tell our story. Are we not part of Team Canada?

Indeed our check-off dollars can buy the adds and tell the story.

What do you think? Should we be proactive and tell our story to the public?

This is time for the producer groups to do what our checkoff dollars pay for.

What to do on an individual level, I think you had it right in another thread. lock the bins until canola's back at 15. China is playing a game to buy canola on the cheap.

The weird thing is that the tariff is only on oil & meal, not seed. So I think part of their goal is also to bankrupt the processing industry that adds value domestically to our exports.

In 2024, $20 million of canola oil was sent to China by Canada. $920 million of Canola meal was also sent. In this context, canola oil to China is no big deal.

The government will be content to tell canola growers in 2025 that it provided FCC with $60 million more than that total lost to China, so you have been made whole. Apply for a loan.

$4 billion of canola seed, if it's repeated in 2025 with China, will have no 100% tariff. Look south for the real reason for the canola seed price haircut that the market has applied in advance of April 2

      Follow Marusko advice.

Interesting comment. After years of big business pushing to move the value add to china, it starts to sink in that it was maybe not such a good idea.

Years of dragons den and shark tank billionaires say to move it China and saying they would help. Seems we became reliant on China , who in turn became the real innovators of efficiency.

When they first started talking about moving production to China because it’s cheaper, and your not a good CEO if your not doing that. Short term gain for longer term pain was my thoughts.

Were the Oilers touched with alittle bad karma for having Carnage on the ice for practice. McDavid is out. Bruised, broken ribs? And they lost the game.

The crush industry processes what % of the crop?
The crush industry needs to ship the meal: What % of the meal goes to China?
The crush industry is responsible for jobs in our industry and a competitive price.

Value add is essential to our sector.

            Lock the bins: 15$

Did the west think China would just be happy building widgets for us?
Now the are about the only country that can put up a full scale nuclear reactor under budget and ahead of schedule.
Our LNG plant in BC was built in China and floated in as components on ships for assembly here.

They want to dominate the auto market.

They build an F 35 knock off and threaten to take over much of the military market.

              Etc, etc..

Yes the billionaires who told companies they must move production to China are now promoting MAGA . They all suck up to Trump hoping for a big payoff which i am sure they will get.

Remember the cars Japan sent us in the 60s and 70s? Rust buckets that were cheap and then just got better and better. Look at their auto industry and their products now. China is on the same track and India could be right behind them. North America is a high cost economy which creates opportunity for lower cost economies. Economies evolve and go through cycles. Change happens. There is no guarantee that brands like Cat, John Deere, etc. will always be on top.

Actually it was demoncrapic connected billionaires that shipped US jobs to china. President Trump is busy reshoring those jobs. Tariffs are one of the tools used to do that. This is why those same billionaires tried to slam down the stock market these past few weeks in an attempt to derail the president. As Trumps policies take effect, US stocks are regaining those losses as evidenced by the market action this past week.
