Generations prior received government money. I didn't see that causing consolidation.
What causes consolidation is lack of support . When a son or daughter see what dad does to make a living and they try something else and find it more rewarding than the farm, that's when there is no one to take over. Machinery runs its life cycle and it is over.
Or guys that helped dad from age 15 to 45 and decide 30 years is enough and retire with the old man , who is at 75.
Every generation has received farm support relative to the crisis, because it's always crisis management with agriculture.
Steel and auto workers already have the commitment for aid.
I watched an area clear out in the 70s and 80s , it wasn't that these guys were bad farmers , the debt and lack of real support and its effects on families led to the consolidation. Every one was trying to save the farm , working off the farm , and a lack of family life led to breakups and sales. It wasn't because some farmers had money from support , it was a problem of generational timing and lack of support.
There will always be a failure or just a sale for reasons we don't understand - health, had enough etc. Good time to get out and try something different.
As I said above does that 45 - 50 year old want to take on debt if there is no one to take over or allow the 75 year old some retirement and have some himself?

I think they are just finishing up the payouts from the last trade deal where dairy lost 0.0000001% of their market share while dumping millions of litres of milk and people are lined up at food banks.

Sounds like you and I are from the same generation.
Commoditization demands consolidation. Read that twice.
Neither God nor the Constitution gives us the right to farm.
All things come to an end.
I'm grateful for the life I've had yet regret some of the sacrifices. Think I'd trade it all for a house full of laughter.
