OTTAWA -- Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl is expecting to get the results of the barley plebiscite early next week.

OTTAWA -- Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl is expecting to get the results of the barley plebiscite early next week.

Vote administrator K-P-M-G plans to count the votes on the Canadian Wheat Board's barley monopoly beginning Saturday.

Strahl says he has been told the count could be done by Sunday.

He says as soon as he gets the results, he'll take it to cabinet and decide how to proceed.

Strahl says he doesn't know yet when he'll release the results publicly.

Farmers who have lobbied for years for the right to bypass the Canadian Wheat Board sense victory is just around the corner.

But wheat board chairman Ken Ritter has said farmers should have to go through a second plebiscite if Ottawa wants to change the Canadian Wheat Board Act and eliminate its monopoly.

Ritter must have shares in KPMG

    Report on Business Section

"WORLD TRADE Economic organizations take Canada to task

Cite foreign investment restrictions, trade barriers and poor productivity growth"

"The Economist Intelligence Unit, affiliated with The Economist magazine, warned in a report yesterday that Canada faces challenges in preserving its status as one of the most business-friendly countries in the world."

"Separately, the World Trade Organization report, which reviewed Canada's trade policies for the first time since 2003, said Ottawa's subsidization of agriculture has increased in the last three years."

"The WTO singled out Canada for slapping more than 200-per-cent duties on foreign eggs, poultry and dairy, and for operating a monopoly sales agency for Western Canadian wheat and barley, noting that Ottawa is working on phasing out the Canadian Wheat Board's single-desk marketing powers."

"*** Tax rates Percentage of marginal tax rates on capital, 2005 *** Canada 39% Brazil 39 United States 38 Germany 37 Russia 35 Japan 34 France 33 India 24 Australia 24 Britain 22 Czech Republic 18 Switzerland 17 Mexico 17 Ireland 14 SOURCES: C.D. Excerpts from Financial Post

      "WTO slams Canadian trade walls

Canada should dismantle "significant" trade barriers it uses to protect its wheat, dairy and other agricultural producers, the World Trade Organization said yesterday.

In a review of Canadian trade policies, WTO said Ottawa applies tariffs exceeding 200% on some imports of chicken, turkey, eggs and dairy, and runs a monopoly on Western Canadian wheat and barley sales at the Canadian Wheat Board."

Thank God we don't have Amercican milk coming into this country. I am glab that I know we are drinking safe Canadian milk, not that crap druged milk they push on people in the states. I for one, am very grateful for our dairy quota system. I don't feel like going out the milk my own cow just to ensure that the milk I feed my family is safe. Put a 500% tariff on milk, see if I care.

How can we expect other countries to end there subsidies when we do the exact same in the supply managed sector. Supply management us B.S. Free Trade is what the world should strive for and we definitly are not doing our part. I highly doubt that there is anything wrong with US milk.

I am 100% in favour of Supply Management for dairy, egg, and poultry production. This OUR country, and we should have policies that protect and enhance the viability of OUR farm enterprises.

The WTO is nothing but a cabal of self-interested countries looking after one thing...enhanced PROFITS for a handful of nations and powerful companies. The WTO has squawked for years about the CWB and they want it GONE. With the CWB GONE, they can do what they want with grain trading and it would not necessarily be in our favour either.

We have had to defend ourselves against these thieves for years.

              nw9flynn,

Do a little bit of research on what they put into US milk. It will make you sick to your stomach. It is almost a crime against humanity as what is going on in the states with the milk that is fed to their people.

All forced on people by giant multi-nationals that are raking in millions on the milk enhancing drugs that they pump into the animals down there. Those drugs are banned in Canada for a reason (they have been deemed unsafe for human consumption).

Parsley, It is the hormones, etc. that the US gives their cows so they produce more milk. The practice is banned in Canada as it is considered unsafe.
