    barley poll

Curious, how would one vote today if the plebiscite was held now? Myself, after all the the issues arising lately would change my vote from choice to removal of barley completely from the monopoly. Apparently we as farmers and business men and women don't know how to run our business or read. Therefore the "choice" question is false and misleading.
So here are the options again
1 - maintain monopoly powers of the CWB in regards to barley.
2 - opt for choice where by the CWB can still market barley along in a free market environment.
3 - remove barley from the monopoly and allow producers to market their barley to whom they choose.

    I vote for number 3

We voted for number 3 then and we would vote for number 3 now.

I still see these polls as more damaging then helpful. The whole industy (which includes farmers) needs to work together to have a system that rewards innovation and respects everyone in the chain or chains.

To view these polls as; because the farmer wants make it so is not a good approach. To me it's kind of like a union vote on a contract that is not sustainable for the company. Yeh they "won" the vote but the company went down so they lost their job.

I would like to see more innovators in our industry. I don't see us encouraging this by operating with an attitude that we as farmers are most important.

Voted option 2 originally but now definitely option 3. Sick of these crybabys that can not understand that the vast majority of us want to manage our own affairs especially when it comes to marketing our own commodities. The burberts and wilagroes of the industry can continue to use their precious wheat board if they so desire while the rest of us move on to economic prosperity in a free market world where those that are willing to pursue new business relationships with buyers, exporters and end users are rewarded. Bring on the next vote for wheat and durum. It cant happen soon enough!!!!!!!

I agree with your statements on polls and echo your thoughts on working together. That is what I had imagined when I originally voted for #2. The idea that we can work with the CWB to create as farmers a truly farmer driven grain entity. One that puts politics and personal biases aside and works hard with firm direction for the benifit of all producers. I appreciate your comments!

Several things that really erk me.
One, no daily pricing or pros on Barley.
Two, taking the government to court.
Three, thinking that they cannot get barley deliveries.
Four, asking government for money to make farmers deliver with no plan to pay extra to farmers. Somehow it seems it is the maltsters that have the monopoly working for them.
Five, they put uncertainty into the market in hope to drive down prices which may not be working. Free market will adapt much faster than they would.
Six, Allowing other farmers to deliver into the next crop year, damaging my current year pro. Mind you that has been happenning since forever. I should have known. Some farmers who deliver everything should be compensated. Can we take the CWB to court on that one? I don't think any normal company would get away with that. Say they have a group of farmers in a pool with a set number of tons. Why should some be let out and not others?

              Voting option 3 now.

Given another chance, I would vote #3.

Maybe the next vote should be a 2 question vote, with a 68% majority required to keep the single desk. My understanding is that Quebec law dictates a 75% majority required to impose a compulsory marketing board.

The canola vote in the 70's required a 2/3ds majority? Precedent has been set.

                  Wedino,

The Quebec logic is hard to argue with, Ontario uses the same % as Quebec I understand.

Perhaps the single desk should be voted on for both wheat and barley at the same time.

I think the CWB has really misjudged this court thing.

2/3rds must be in favour for the single desk to continue... otherwise it is toast.

We have been as badly treated on our wheat as our barley IMHO... I believe it is time to fix this grizzly for good... turn it into a hard working border collie!
