    Danny Brezhnev

Danny Williams, Newfoundland and Labrador's premier -- no stranger to battles with big business -- took on AbitibiBowater Inc. Tuesday as the province passed legislation to expropriate hydroelectric, water and timber assets belonging to newsprint giant.

And how about George-Bush-Brezhnev? He's nationalizing the banks, investment houses, insurance co's, car companies, etc. Also supports ethanol (aka farm welfare), and exorbitant farm subsidies.

So Danny Williams doesnt like our red-neck, culture-lacking, PM Steve Harper. Big deal, most premiers also dont like him but they dont have the guts of Danny Williams to admit it.

By the way, Danny is a self made man, a multi-millionaire, and Steve works for the government. What a joke of a PM.

I bet the conservatives throw him out before the end of 2009.

yeah who does williams think he is standing up for his constituents? he should be scooping resources off to these multi-nationals. he's doing abitibi a favor by relieving them of these assets that were just depleting its income statement. williams just might be the kind of politician we need to get control back to the people rather than a bunch of lying mba's.

Why the hell should those companies have the rights to resources when they arre pulling out. Kinda like the ripoff her in Saskatchewan Weyerhauser closed all it's mills but yet holds the timber rights so no one can try to develope something else. We need more Danny boys to lead this country not the bought off puppets we have now!!!!!

Yes comrades! My favorite is the way the feds nationalized the entire western grain industry in 1943.They sure stamped out those evil big companies by blocking all the exits.
We're all so much better off living in a part of the country where trade is verbotten.Where we are not allowed to use our minds to do other than work the fields.
Governments must use their power to enslave us in order to make us free.

Skhadenuf - what differance is timber from land???? If we all chose to SMF (which will never happen), could the government not just take over the land to prevent starvation. That is what we are talking about. We do not want to see things like this occur.

Well to me the difference is this, land is purchased and owned, and the owner should always have control to do what ever he or she pleases. In the case of the trees and I have to admit I don't know as much as I should have about the agreements to make a complete judgement but it is my understanding that these companies did not buy and pay for all the trees present and future they simply purchase a right to consume trees for processing while their business is in operation. If they are paying a rent for their forest area I suppose based upon what they normally consume while they are at a shut down then no the government should not be able to do anything but as I understand it they are not paying anything. As a farmer I'd love the opportunity to only pay rent to the crown when I make money by growing a crop if I decided not to grow a crop on government land would I not have to pay the rent??
In addition there is way more to this issue in regards to the fact that these crown resource deals entail all kinds of tax benefits etc. in turn for providing jobs in those geographic areas therefore if the company is not providing the jobs they shouldn't be getting those benefits.
A bit off topic but just a question back to anyone out there. Let's just suppose a certain country or one company or individual doesn't matter who buys up farm
land to the point where they control the production here in Canada and they decide to take all that production to feed their own country and we starve here what should be done? by individuals and by government? Not intended to be sarcastic just would like to know opinions.

I have to agree with you on this after thinking about it a little more. Kinda like telling Lands Branch that you are no longer running cows on Crown land but you want to retain the lease. I guess the real question is wether or not they pay annual lease (so to speak) rates irregardless of using or not utilizing the resource. Not sure on the answer on that one. I am guessing that this is mainly theatrical as if the company does not want to utilize the resource it is because money likely can not be made in the sector. Niche operators may be able to. Hope I do not start believing in CWB single desk next.

I sincerely hope you do not start believing in the single desk either. I've got a habit also of speaking too much before all the facts are in, and once it's written down and submitted you're kinda up the creek unless others are open minded enough to realize those things happen. Not sure if you celebrate the holiday or not but if you do have a good one!
