    Canola Advance

This should be with farm management, but doesn't look like it would be read.
Wonder how many are giving up on the cash advance program
as set out by the canola growers. With that number of hoops
you have to get signed, they must be having a big problem
with farmers not repaying the advance that are issued by the
canola growers. The local person are not going to help fill out
the application any more because of the problems of returns for
errors. I did a quick read last night and think you will need a good
    accountant and legal advice.
I have used the advance for many years, but now I need
to send birth certificate and proof of Canadian resistance
(no information on what that is) also the relationship
form will need legal advice if you are doing any work
    for a relative.
Think it is time to talk to my banker and forget about
    the canola growers.
hope this is readable as it doesn't look very good now.

I am sorry to say I am one of they who had issues repaying my advance once. In 2006, I took out an advance on canola in April. Got my money, used my money, then could not seed more than ten per cent of my land for two years straight due to flooding. The second year I airplane seeded a quarter of canola. First year seeded one quarter of HRS. When I told them my issue, they could care less and were quite ruthless in collection. I have NEVER left anyone hanging, and so it ticked me off they were not very decent to work with in the worst years of my farming career. I finally did get enough money to pay them back, and will never take a spring advance again, because you never know. I too would rather approach my banker for funds. That way you also have a bin full of canola that is a tangible and bankable value, rather than the piddly check you get otherwise. Interest is cheap, and I know my banker better than i know some dude who has no clue what flooding does to a guy...My banker also explained that the thing he needs to sign when you take the paperwork over to him basically says they have first right on any assets they wish if one comes in trouble, which makes it tough for the bank to maintain decent security, especially for a young guy with no paid for land, etc...

I would encourage everyone to contact Mr.Ritz.I have contacted his office as well as my own M.P. and complained about the process as well as the canola growers inability to deal with the applications. His office has said they are making changes to office and staffing issues but no mention of the paper work that has to be done year after year.Funny, the paper work for wheat and barley through CWB is quite simple and consistant.

Well am I wrong or is this government of Canada money administered only by cwb and ccga, This is not cwb money and not ccga money, so why the different rules. If this is controlled by the minister of agriculture then it's time for him to start actually doing some things. We keep hearing the governing MPs stating how much they've done but when you question them on specifics there really is nothing there at least for us out west here. One of many issues unresolved the CWB is still here and can't seem to be changed and recognizably that is a big issue, but cash advance? come on Mr. Ritz this is small issue that surely can be fixed up and operated more simpler and farmer friendly. The idea of the advance originally was to provide farmers their own money quicker, not be turned into more of a headache. But I do suppose it does show that the so called economic boom for the farming industry is not what the politicians and media are trying to portray to the public farm debt is through the roof, farms are being lost same rate as ever and still we have absolutly nothing meaningful in terms of a farm program.

just so you know, if you have taken the advance before, you don't have to send a copy of your birth certificate or proof of citizenship and also a couple of the other forms are not needed either. That being said, I dispise them for being so slow and inept also. Another thing that bugs me is that you only get the interest free for the spring only. What the hell, an advance is an advance. I only grow one crop per year, Why do I have 2 advances(spring and fall) They like to promote that it is interest free, but only give it to you for a few months. It should be $100000 interest free year round, not just for one advance!

Fortunately for the CWB there is a pool of money for risk. CCGA does not. Hence the difference in administration and forms. CWB can also absorb the risk of unharvested crops insurance again because of the 'ol pot o money.

How is there any risk to the CCGA? The funds all come from the gov't. There should not be any difference between how they run it vs the CWB! Every time I've asked them why they are so slow, incompetant or whatever, they blame the gov't. They say its the gov't setting the rules for them, not the CCGA.

We have never used either advance but want to this year. Can anyone give me the Cole's notes on the canola and CWB advance - ie interest free, amount, ease of use?

dirtgirl or anyone if you don't have crop insurance you can use agristability as a backstop.

the person who fills them out at the elevator will be able to help you with whatever questions you have.

If there are any MP's on here could you answer who makes the decision on the difference between the cash advance at the CWB and Canola Growers is it those institutions or is the Ag department who decide all the forms etc. I simply cannot understand how the Canola growers can continue on like this, they keep telling us the ag department makes the rules well if so then why the less hastle with CWB.

Dirtgirl I would think it should come down to which crop you intend to hold the longest in your marketing plan. The longer you hold the more benefit you have from the interest free providing your commodity price does not go down. If your elevator agent is fumbling and having trouble with the paper work then pack up and leave and go to another elevator. That is my Coles.
