Has any one noticed the big jump in feed oats 40 Lbs. I Alberta oats is a premium to barley and wheat right now. $2.45 delivered Calgary. I am curious about prices in other areas since the beginning of September.
Alberta Grain commission publishes oat prices at feed mills weekly. http://www.agric.gov.ab.ca/economic/stats/feedgr.html.
Nice to see oats trading up with other feedgrains. I suspect the local horse market around Calgary is paying up for feed supplies/quality. What are other peoples local prices/pricing ideas (comments on quality offered will be usefull)? Given the hay shortage this year, what rations are likely to be fed cows?
One of my clients in east central Alberta sold all his 40-lb/bushel Cascade oats grown last year (2 super-B loads) to a neighbor for $2.25/bu. picked up in his yard. These oats will be used to background the buyer's calves. The buyer claims barley is "too hot" to background 300 to 350 lb. calves. I ended up talking to both the buyer and the seller and both were really happy. It's a pleasure to hear when both buyer and seller are happy.
