Will pork aid help or hinder?

    http://www.farms.com/FarmsPages/ENews/NewsDetails/tabid/189/Default.aspx?NewsID=22881

Canada’s government will set off squeals of protests no matter how it decides to handle a plea for aid from its desperate hog farmers.

If Ottawa fails to come through on the $800-million loan request, Canada stands to lose a large chunk of its once-lucrative hog sector to bankruptcy and closures.

But aid for Canadian hogs will read as an attack on farmers in the United States, Canada’s largest market, where producers say they’ll do what they can to stop the proposal.

“Essentially, what this does is it transfers suffering among pork producers from north of the border to south of the border, and we’re not going to stand by and let that happen,” said Nick Giordano, vice-president of the U.S. National Pork Producers Council. “We’re not going to want to wait. We’re going to scream bloody murder. We’re going to go political.”

High feed costs and recession-depressed exports have ruined bottom lines and frayed tempers in the North American hog industry, where farmers have lost money for about two years. Hog prices fell to a six-year low on Thursday.

“It’s never been so bad,” Mr. Giordano said.

Sounds like a funding announcement will be made Saturday. What's the best route to take? Maybe it's time to forget about the US...

I say the US needs a taste of reality. Look to outside markets and protect our own farmers. PS on the US market and here is why. They subsidise every sector of agriculture to the nines. I mean every square inch. But when we try to protect our own were hammered. Well its time to ps on their fire. Their broke.
Friend worked in Florida for 15 years had a green card came home for sons high school grad. (Dumb move) Got to the border and was escorted back to Canada. We have people in the USA who can do your Job. (site foreman for construction company). His company tried to get him back no luck. He cant even go get his furniture or vehicle back. Nice. They use others when time is good to do their work then when the shit hits the fan they close the door. Its time for Canada to get a spine we control the flow so lets go.

What happened to CPCs request for a significant, "permanent" sow herd buyout to end this ridiculous oversupply we have on our hands? Just giving out more loans to keep the sow herds going longer is exactly the wrong thing to do.

A "permanent" sow herd buyout is about a stupid a phrase as I've heard for a long time. LOL

You really didn't buy into that crap, did you?

Permanent until the next election ink bottle is handed out with your briefs on whom to vote for.

        Will we never learn?

Oh boy here we go with the BIG AID program for canadian hog producers. What a crock of shit, our morons are pondering whether to give a loan while the Americans have programs of real money in their farm programs. time to sort out whose raking in the money off your sweat and work not just hog producers cattle, grain etc. I sure as hell don't see prices at the store going down while our producers are going broke our free market is myth. Our government is failing in trade deals for all commodities which is a major part of all this mess that never gets enough attention. Good luck to you hog and cattle producers if it freezes soon us grain people will be right there behind you all broke. Tell the ag department stick the loan up there ass and while their doing that that's where your vote will be next election. Is CAIS going to work for you!

Parsley, that's why I had the "permanent" part in quotes, kinda like the last one what 18 months ago now? Crazy, we've got a group of young farmers in Ontario rallying every week because they want the province to give them aid to help them not just continue in hogs but EXPAND. The hog industry was dead when they got into it, it's been dead, and it isn't going to revive just because they like raising hogs.

              And I wore dark glasses......

You gotta learn to read a woman's glasses a little better, but perhaps being an Easterner, you have a handler doing it for you.

                dalek,

Could pig farmers adopt an adaptation of Eugene Whelan's beefy slogan, "Eating Beef Makes You Ferocious!", and get more 401 shoppers eating pork?

                How's about:

"Jump from 101 to 121... Eating Pork Makes You Smart"

"The Family Who Eats Pork Together Gets to Bank Together from the Money Leftovers"

                "Pork Definitely Hardens One Artery."

                Any help to you? Pars

                  Working on it Pars.

Way I hear it there could soon be some Quebec truckers getting turned around when they're bringing subsidized Quebec hogs into Ontario.

Kinda grinds on people here that our tax dollars are going to make sure Quebec producers get a floor price of almost double what many here are being paid.

Federal subsidies to Quebec are obscene. That would be a very timely election study, btw.

Convincing the 401'ers to pick up a package of pork would be a goldmine strategy. Gotta have ads that travel up their brain artery and permeate.
