Desiccating Durum?

When is the right time to desiccate durum. I've heard
various opinions ranging from "grass green" to "just
turning" to "when you would swath it".
Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

What water volume do you use? What rate of
Roundup? I have heard rates used to desiccate
durum from .5L/acre to over 1 litre roundup
original and .33 to .67 for roundup HC. And water
volumes from 3 gallons to over 5 gallons per acre.

I do not have much experience with dessiccating
durm. I did some a few days ago for the first time.
Have to wait and see how it works. It sure was a
lot faster than swathing. What happens if it rains
on it after it is dessicated?

If I end up doing any I will be going with 1 liter per
acre Roundup at 5 gallons per acre.

I can suggest why we seldom will swath durum. We find the straw to be extremely slippery, and it will fall through stubble if done parallel to 10.5 or 12 inch spacing. It would hold up at 90 degrees, but Seedhawk trenches are not forgiving bouncers on swathers. So we sprayed August 21, and did a 1300 bushel test run today to get enough to make an aeration fan work. Tested 19%. Don't want any more of that, so will patiently wait a few more days.

20 plus year of desiccating and have no slough grass no willows, not much of any thing. In our area it brings the whole field in at once other wise would have green patches till October. We now use 140 liters of Clear-out 41 to a quarter. New fields its a full liter. Also we go at 5 gallons an acre and Speed 15 or better. Have fun you have a good idea what your crop will be like. You either cry or ecstatic.

Hard Dough, we swathethed some the other day, the kernals are changing color nicely.
