The size and scope of future federal, provincial and municiple deficits will be mind boggling.

Lets say the conservatives haven't dished too much of the infrastructure money and the gm loan gets repaid. How does that affect your prediction?

What idiots. The opposition conspiracy to overthrow the elected (though minority) government last winter stampeded the Harperites into a silly stimulus business, the silliest part being to bail out GM. The rest of the money must be trickling somewhere but nobody has seen it. Meanwhile the economy, thanks to hard working, prudent non-NDP participants in it, those who do not ask what their country can do for them, is stabilizing. Now Harper & Co will get it in the neck for running up a deficit ordered by the opposition, notably the pompous Iggy. The best hope that the deficit won't be too bad is that the government departments couldn't cut the cheques fast enough and someone will shut down the machinery. Stand by for a 7% GST a year from now. That, and spending cuts like nobody has seen before. Slim chances. Actually the closer the level of government to the taxpayer the better the shape of its finances.

agri man give it a rest with NDP ers not working, some of the lazyest people i know are conservatives.
i guess you can generalize if you
want, it just ticked me off.
and thru the years the conservatives have always racked up the biggest deficts , mulroney (a crook as well) devine sold everything and still managed to almost burry the province.
don't like lib.s either but at least there was money in the bank when they were done.
Harper will sacrfice any principal to stay in power. no one to blame but himself. they made me do it.

Sawfly...you forgot to mention that the liberal Trudeau started big government in the late 70's so that by the time Mulroney got into power he was facing a 45 billion annual deficit at a time when interest rates were 22% on my first truck loan. One cannot move the Titanic when its speeding up toward an iceberg. Mulroney could of and should of done more but he inherited a time bomb from Trudeau. I always said that Mulroney was happy to balance his daily household finances without worrying about the monthly payment ie. he focused on balancing annual government expenditures without including the compounding interest on the debt. Mulroney put in the GST and Chretian promised to take it out although the Liberals realized this unpopular tax that they could blame on the Conservatives would be the thing that eventually gets them out of a deficit. In economics, short term policies take 1-2 years to have an impact, long term policies may take 5 - 10 years to show their full impact.

Media, left wingers (same thing, actually) want the minority government to work together. How the hell does Harper go it alone on a balanced budget? He would have been out on his ear and we would be having a joint Liberal/NDP/Quebec government rule....what would our deficit be then?
