    Gluten Strength CPSR/CWRS some varieties

    Spoke with Dr Bin Xiao Fu the head of the CGC Grain Research Lab in Winnipeg this morning:

    There are consultations going on, to increase the gluten strength in our CWRS.

    Here is the what I found:

    CPS Red, Is Awned (A)Foremost is substandard... likely to go to General Purpose (GP) class.

    New Variety to be released for spring 2016 (A)Penhold... has gluten strength to meet class standards.

    CWRS:

    Not Awned (NA) Harvest is low... likely to go to GP Class

    Redwater, Muchmore, and Brandon, are not conclusively too low... but are on the low side and need more testing.

    Lillian, Unity, Kane, and Mckenzie are all on the low side of the gluten... and may cause concern.

    (NA)Utmost, (NA)Plentiful, (A)Stettler, are all good for the new standard being purposed.

    (NA)CDC Go... A PUBLIC VARIETY that no one owns... is on the high side of the gluten standard purposed.

            I would suggest when it is done... that the new standards will be implemented August 1 2016... there is usually one or 2 crop years notice depending on how the consultations go for the gluten strength increase.

                    Carberry is likely OK... as it did not fall into the class of disputed lower gluten strength...

                      So Unity might only have 2-3 years left before going to GP class?

                        So what does the consumer want ? High gluten , low gluten, no gluten ? Gluten free products every where on TV , in grocery stores...
                        A lot of mixed signals out there to the producer ,
                        Then throw in the Wheat belly wizard that says all our wheat is toxic ??? Hard to figure out what to grow when the message to the consumer is more confusing than any time in history....

                          Does anyone have more feedback on Penhold?

                          How does it's yield and protein compare vs other CPSR varieties?

                          Will it be grouped with the declassified CWRS varieties with lower gluten strengths?
