Canola left overwinter deteriorates a lot and of course there can be significant losses to wildlife (mice, deer, elk). Yields of spring combined canola are lucky to reach half of the fall.
In the past, crushers have complained about the quality of spring combined canola, citing high amounts of sprouted seed with high levels of free fatty acids that cause oil to degrade quickly. They usually will not buy spring combined canola if they can help it.
