Wil, I too would like to know. Traditionally, my neighbors tell me that quality silage of any kind is worth about 10x the bushel price of barley pre ton of silage. This assumes 60-65% moisture. Shrunk out silage should be worth more if the quality is still good. Off hand, one has to realize that silage is expensive to haul around. Therefor, silage close at hand can be valuable. Silage miles from an end user can be very expensive to produce since resale can be low.
in our drought year(s), the local D.A.'s office told us our brly silage was worth $50 at the pit. if i recall correctly the FIDP number assigned was $53 in the pit. we had bought some in the field that year when everyone was scrambling for feed for a penny a pound ($22). still, i agree the biggest factor is the proximity to your cows. maybe it's cheaper to haul the cattle to the feed?
