    Seed Growers

Can anyone give some advice on getting into growing certified seed? What all is involved in doing it and what channels do I go through to get started?
    Thanks

There is a good publication on the regulations for growing pedigree seed at the Canadian SeedGrowers website.
    The URL is: http://www.seedgrowers.ca/regulations/Sections%20-%202003_03_07/Sections%20in%20html%20&%20pdf.htm
That will be a good place to start reading!

The best advice is to go talk to your present seed supplier and see if there is a variety that you can grow for them.

It has become prohibitive with the costs of licenses, inspection fees, and all the other things that you need to do to produce certified or higher seed. The days of when you could put some sweat equity in and get rewarded are gone from the seed business. Good luck

Some of the worst quality seed I have ever growen was when I bought foundation seed from a "reputable" grower and multiplied it for him. We had to rogue for 5 days just to make inspection. There was hulless barley in a malt vatiety. Watch your quality! Ultimately there is no real return to the grower so I have stlped playing that game
