    Hybrid Canola

Has anyone out there ever used the seed(2nd generation) from Hybrid Canola such as Invigor? What were your results?

    #2
neighbours did. Good results. no difference side by side to bought seed. One rep told me second generation Invigour was as close percentagewise to hybrid as first generation Hyola 401. Quite a few acres going in like that in this area this year. His was 2153

Remember, the first generation after cross pollination or hybridization is genetically uniform and is called the first filial generation or F1. Planting F1 seed would produce second generation (F2) seed. Planting the F2 seed could produce a extremely variable crop due to segregation into all possible combinations of the dominant and recessive characters of the parents. The number of different F2 types will depend on the difference between the 2 original parents, but is often in the thousands. With hybrid canola, often the parents can be relatively low yielding, late maturing etc. but combine well to produce hybrid seed with high yield potential. So in the F2 some low yielding parent types and mixtures of parent types with poor agronomic traits can be present.
