Someone I know wants to know about no-till farming. What do I say are the advantages and what are the disadvantages? Dos anyone know the stats on how many acres in Alberta are no-till now? How about minimum-till?

According to the 2001 Census of Agriculture 27% of the land prepared for seeding was under no-till (that's up from 10% in 1996 and just 3% in 1991).
The census also indicated that reduced tillage acres (that left most of the residue on the surface) measured 43% in 2001.
Advantages include moisture and soil conservation, improved soil health, opportunities to diversify crop rotations, reduced fuel consumption, labour savings, and more.
There are no eal disadvantages but there are definite management practices that must be considered in order to be succesful. These include residue management, fertility management, integrated pest management, crop rotations and seeding management. Direct seeding can be accomplished succesfully with everything from a modified hoe drill to a brande new no-till air drill if the rest of the cropping system is managed accordingly.
For more information contact Reduced Tillage LINKAGES or visit their website at www.reducedtillage.ca
Since that time the acres have continued to increase under direct seeding and no-till.
