Slow to get back here! Just wanted to tell you that I said 1 of our large tractors was a 2870.1 not all...sorry to confuse you. Not all areas in the province can gorw chick peas or lentils because of lack of heat units and soil type. We have grown lentils will a bit of luck and we have tried buckwheat, borage.Peas have been in our regular rotation. The frost hit our area hard in 04...ave to below in 03...total crop loss in 02{ which was our first ever total loss) Even in the 30's gramps said there was a bit of crop in the sloughs that they could harvest. It is not a good ROI when you get 50 bus. of feed wheat at $2.00, I don't care how you market it! Sounds like you are living in the best of conditions where you are at! Out here in the real farming world there is a crisis!

I also farm in Southern Sask. We have been very fortunate to have dodged the disasters that other parts of the provice have been plagued with. It is pretty easy to sit back and blow your own horn when things are going good. I think some arogant farmers need to take their ROI and shove it. These Ag-Ec talking big shots who don't realize the smaller farmers makes up a large percentage of rural Sask, our community spirit and ways of life are more important than the "big guy". I farm 3500 acres with endless opportunity to expand. That is just the way it is these days. I do however have a huge heart for the smaller farmer. It is these jerks with managable ROI's and "low fixed costs per acre" the are screwing up the farming industry. To get big they bought overpriced land because as the increased there land base.....magically their fixed cost per acre went down (which to them in the end all and be all). So they didn't give a damn if they were inflating land prices to an unacepetable level. Frusterating.
