Has anyone been able to lock in any fertilizer prices this fall for next spring. All our local fertilizer dealers say the manufacters won't set any prices because of uncertain oil and gas market. I'm sure they've used the future contracts to establish prices many times before, looks like there out to shaft the farmer's, again.

As a sales agronomist at an independant fertilizer and crop protection outlet I have been dealing with this issue lots in the past three weeks. I do not believe that the fertilizer manufacturers are trying to shaft anyone. They will never be able to pass on the whole cost increase assoiated with natural gas. The increase would just be too big and resistance to great. Rather than go on about it I will suggest an article in Oct. Country Guide that sheds light on this subject. The title is 'build 2001 cropping plan around costly nitrogen'. Please read this piece and try not to feel that we are all out to get you.
