Hasn't mankind learned from all the horrible mistakes in the past that you can't mess around with nature. Genetic and biological diversity is very important in the fight against diseases that threaten our food species. Creating these super-plants with scientific traits is not all 100% good.

All I am saying is be cautious. Nature is many many times smarter and deceptive than any Monasanto science lab.

The dollar drives the science. The dollar pays for ads and speakers to present the facts to us. But the dollar ignores consequences.

When nature decides to build up tolerance to these super-species, where do we turn to for our new and better breed. Not the old varities, they are long gone. We turn to the Monsantos and will pay big money to get our hands on the next variety that will combat the new threats presented by nature.

producers should be looking for sustainability in food production. probably more clues in developing a sustainable system to be found in nature than at a free breakfast put on by monsanto, dow, or all the rest of them put together.

        Well, well smart farmers,

So what if people that invest in to plant breeding (and there are more then just Monsanto & Dow) want some guranteed return on the investment they make?

Who can re-use the fertilizer from 2005 in 2006, who can re-use the other inputs?

But seed, the only source that realy makes your yield should be free forever? Get away from your socialistic thinking and become business people.

        Your whining makes me sick.

O, one more thing for the smarties in the circle: only corn and rye is cross pollinating for our major grain, so your neighbours field can be what ever wheat and would not effect your XYZ variety.

Pulseman represents the worst type of farmer (incredibly un-informed). They are a dangerous type and are puddy in the hands of multi-national agri-business.

That being said. Mr. Pulseman Smart Farmer. Please read the following.

Wheat is self pollinating. If any of you have been in a field that has decided to release its pollen and a gust comes up you know that pollen can travel a good distance. The scariest thing about this is that all wheat can cross-pollinate. Winter wheat can cross-pollinate with hard red spring if they were grown at the same time. Durum and hard red spring are both grown at the same time and can both cross-pollinate. With the introduction of GM wheat not only are we putting our hard red spring wheat crops in jeopardy, we are putting every other wheat crop on the chopping block as well.

          Get your facts straigth. Brainy!

Plus, it would be nice if you had an open mind. I think multi-nationals and agri-business are a good thing for agriculture. But we must challenge them on every front because what they do effects us.

Brainboy Pulseman, with his narrow mind, has decided for us that we hate them and should force them to stop doing beneficial research. Give me a brake brainy.

One more thing. We never asked for free seed. And we are not whinning. So get off your un-informed high horse and post something with intellegence.

Some informative insight would be appreciated. Not your slandering comments.

            Mr. Business Pulseman.

Lakenheath, I agree with what your saying. Pulseman we have nothing to gain from this kind of science. The short gain is far less of a benefit, compared to the long term disaster.

One more thing Pulseman the guys who are investing in this project, that is their gamble. I don't feel responsible for those idiots investing in something that is completly useless.

                  Pulseman,
Well said, you write the truth and the first sensible reply to this thread but I think it is falling on deaf ears. Keep up the good comments.

Yes, Gahn. You can't re-use fertilizer. Isn't the truth fascinating.

What is really fascinating is how ignorant you are. Even if we put aside the environmental and social aspects of the terminator gene, you have to look at it's impact on the markets.

Many countries that purchase our wheat do not want a GM product. The people we sell to do not want it! Are we as farmers that ignorant to ignore our customer's demands?

But some short-sighted farmer has decided that GM wheat is a good agronomic fit on his farm and ignore the consequences. Open your eyes!

                        Dear Lakenheath,

I write in many forums from around the world and the first time I have been refered to as ignorant or insulted has been on this site, in fact you and your insulting comments would be removed from most forums. If you cannot control your comments maybe you should leave this forum until you inform yourself of the benefits of GM and biotec.

                          Dear Ghan,

I am sorry you are so sensitive. Ignoring facts is being ignorant. I believe you and pulseman were ignoring some important facts.

I don't see that as any worse from your first post stating that Pulseman's post was the only sensible post. Unsensible and ignorant are not that far off.

I have been posting on this site for a long time and sometimes get into some healthy heated debates. I do not curse or insult. I debate. If you can't handle that then don't read what I post.

Another thing Ganh. It would be nice if you were informed before you posted comments. We are debating the terminator gene, not biotech in general. If you would have read closely I am not against biotech research. I merely said we should challenge any science that threatens farmers.

I don't see you lectureing Pulseman on hurling commments like calling us socialists, whiners, smart smart farmers, etc. Oh, wait, he is on your side of the debate so I guess that is o.k.

News flash to Ganh. GM and biotech crop are not the solution to world hunger or improving the agriculutral situation in Canada. We are lead to believe they are, but if you did some digging and research you would quickly find that maybe they aren't all they are cracked up to be. But, like you, I am getting off the debate topic (which is the incredible socio-agriculturally destructive terminator gene).

maybe we should stop to consider that the goal is to produce food. biotech opens up amazing possibilities but so far many of the advances in technology have only served to reduce food production in the hungriest parts of the world. the large seed companies want to control the production of food. it is certainly debatable whether or not this is effective in feeding people or promoting healthy landscapes. the producers who defend the interests of the large seed companies should stop to consider whether or not the biotech has been of economic benefit to the farmer. our communities continue to dwindle and our debt continues to increase as we chase the technology. i think it's time we looked at the larger picture.
