The choice in software for agricultural options is somewhat limited:
1. Settler products - Gold, Gold Lite. Built for farm operations and designed for tax returns - GST and Income tax. Intuitively very good for farmers and support is excellent. Full version (Gold) has features that some farmers will not use.
2. Quickbooks. A double entry bookkeeping software program (it's cousin Quicken is single entry). Has an agricultural component but I would recommend taking a course to get full value. Competitively priced, reports are customizable, interface is very easy and an export feature for your accountant is useful. Farm specific reports need to be tailored and farm-specific items (business-personal breakouts on utilities) need to be done by the user.
3. Simply Accounting. A full double entry accounting program. Can be challenging if you have little background in accounting. Much of the comments with Quickbooks can be applied here. Interface assumes an accounting background.
4. Farmtool for Windows. A single entry software package designed for farm operations. Good entry level software.
Bottom line depends on your knowledge level and your needs. If you want a program that just does GST and Income tax for farms, go with Settler. If you want some flexibility (including keeping track of another business outside of the farm) go with Quickbooks or Simply Accounting.
