Looking at purchasing a 9600 JD after harvest. Looking at the years between 1990 and 1994. Would like later models but price holding me back. Any known problems would help me out also they advertise some with big engine, is there different sized engines. Any info would be appreciated...

Had ours since 91 and would never have anything older, just got rid of our 8820 and got another one. Only problems we've had is with the pickups. they could be heavier with these no till fields. The wheel frames and the bars under the belts tend to crack. minor work but none the less anoying. Ours has the big engine, so don't know how the smaller one works, but I do know that I wouldn't want any less power.

Big engine is definitely worth it on those models. We had a '93 with the 260 hp engine, the 215? hp model was a little underpowered, especially noticable when dumping on the run.
The '93 was the first model year that didn't belch dust out the front of the feeder house. Rented an '89 9600 that was a little difficult to see past the dust at night, so I'd get a a 93 or later if the price difference isn't too much.
Good durable machines though.

In recent discussion with a neighbour who has a 9600 keep a very close eye on the left hand final drive, especially if the machine has over 3500 hrs. Jack it up and use a bar underneath the tire to check for ANY play, if any is found the final drive needs rebiulding.

Did you buy a 9600 yet grainfarmer? We have a 96 model. You get air seat and a yield monitor.I like the 16.9 rear tires. Neighbors have a 94 model with 4000 hrs. Biggest trouble was all walkers and cranks have broken. Check the walkers. After 92 JD used geaseable metal bushings instead of wood block on walker cranks which everyone knows was a total shame as there never were any issues with the wood. Now you must grease them everyday. We cracked the chaffer frame due to a bad bearing on the shoe drive shaft behind the fans. Check shoe crank bearings for play. Check the chopper intermediate drive bearings, shaft and frame around the support brackets. This area is stressed more with a fine cut chopper. Have had trouble in all those areas. Brother had a cracked frame around engine fan on 9610. The PU pump drive bearings give trouble. We both have rebuilt ours. On 9610 they started a small fire. The bolt attaching walker gearcase can break. The seals and bearing in the gearcase went on 9610. We needed seals on the main gearcase at the chopper drive shaft this year. Check rear axle king pin bushings. Relpaced ours at 1200 hrs. They need grease every day. I probably missed some. Hope this helps.
