    Flipping axles

I was talking to a neighbour and he said it is common to flip axles on 4 wheel drive tractors to wear the other side of the gears. I've never heard of this before, but it makes sense. Is this true? At what hours is this generally done? Are the half shafts just switched left to right on both axles, or is something else done?

Did it to our JD 4250 at around 10000 hrs. They said we could potentially get up to another 5000hrs that way. If I remember right, to put in new gears would have costed around $3500. Instead it just costed a few hours labor.
