I farm in Sk and have always purchased machinery insurance for fire, theft and accidental breakdowns. Through a run of bad luck I soon found out that the premiums I was paying were for insurance that didn't exist and therefore I was throwing money away for nothing. For example, a few years back we had a Spr-coupe were the frame snapped in half while we were spraying, SGI called this "Metal Fatigue" and "Normal Wear and tear". Therefore no coverage. Last year, I snapped a cultivator wing when I failed to properly disengage the safety pin when I was taking it out of transport. This was not covered by the new insurance company because they claimed that taking machines out and into transport positions was high risk.
Which leaves me to believe the most of the Farm insurance in Sk is Bogus. I know Alberta has Farm Advocate that investigates these type of breaches.
My question to everyone out there is how do you insure your equipment? What do you look for in your policies?
Any recommendations for Insurance companies that are fair.
