HELP

WE have a IH 1480 combine that will not maintain rotor speed. We have changed the cam,the rollers, the bushings on the outer shieve, the spring and put on a new belt all to no avail. Trying to cut standing HRS wheat with a d****r header. As soon as crop starts to enter the combine the rotor speed drops by 30 to40 rpm and as load increases the rpm's keep dropping until th belt starts to squeel. hope someone has some answers because it is very frustrating with this beautiful harvest weather and not being able to use the combine to it's capacity. The new belt was installed according to the instructions in the owners manual.When the rotor rpm's drop the engine rpm's stay where they should be. Also the cleaning fan rpm's do not change. This also has the nearest dealers service rep baffled.

With the fan speed not dropping you ruled out the double v belt slipping beside the rotor belt. Did it work fine before? Or is it a new machine for you? My first guess is the torque sensor spring is bad(sprung). We had an issue once where the thrust bearing on the end of that spring had dissappeared into thin air and the rotor belt was slipping. Took a while to find out there was a missing part(Bearing) on the end of the spring we now have a 1680 so not sure if your 1480 should have that bearing at all. You may also try tightenning that rotor belt, we do it from time to time when we need the power. Just must watch out when increasing rotor speed that the one sheeve is not at its limit. In 27 years of using a IH I never really heard the rotor belt squeal even when it did slip. One thing for sure if the belt slips for a while it will also be shot (glazed) and will not last another day. Hope that helps, I will check in from time to time.

kamichel, i would agree completely with your comments regarding the rotor drive belt, smoke it once and you'll be changing it within a day! also, your comment about shieve maxing out, you wouldn't notice this till you were under load. food4u, are you in the proper rotor speed range? by the way, what size header do you have on that 1480??

We are using a 25 ft. d****r header and have for several years with no problems.We harvested our pulses and dry land canola. Our problem arose after putting in one day on HRS wheat.

Sounds funny but we changed the two pilot bearings on either side of the gear that you use to change rotor speeds and it works fine now.Will give it a good work out today and know for sure. Will keep you posted. Thank you for your advice and opinions.

YES a simple thing like two bearings caused a whole lot of grief. Now the weather has caused us to stop. OH well farming is still the best profession.
