anybody used one of these? I cant justify the $$$ for an airdrill so Im thinking about shank mounted packers on an airseeder with liquid fert or pulling an extra tank with 46-0-0 or nh3. Can I pull a tank behind a 655 or is the fram to light? Are the shanks heavy enough to direct seed? Did deer make these or were they supplied by someone else (cheaper parts) thanks

Dear Ronny ......this is not a seeder......it is obsolete.........if you think you don't have money now, you will have less later

I just traded my 655 in Nov. for a bourgault. I paid $10 000.
for my 25 FT (1 extra shank) and planted 3 crops with it (approx 2000
acres a yr.) plus I did a lot of deep banding with it too.
I sure you could pull another tank easily behind the JD as the frame looks
as strong as my 8800 bourgault .
As for direct seeding the JD should be heavy enough.
They may be old but I grew some 30 -40 bushel wheat and durum
crops this year with it. I used 14 inch sweeps on mine.
You might have to look pretty hard to find a good one because I know
mine was pretty much worn out when I traded it. It was not worth putting any more money in it.
Try looking for an older bourgaualt ,they seem to be getting cheaper
as time goes on. I

Thaks for the info caseman. johny555 thanks for the informative, intelligent comments, but could you please be a bit more specific (like have you ever seen one) about what you dont like about them besides the fact that they dont cost $40,000 (do you sell new equipment for a living?)

Hi I use a 655 that was converted to no-till with Peacock paired row openers that have packers as part of the shank assembly. I also pull a NH3 wagon behind. It's old technology but affordable, fixable and simple. And it works. Frame strength isn't the problem, but getting it level is a concern although the opener doesn't require a perfectly level frame. Still working on that. Have used it for three years and plan to for few more yet. I've seeded wheat, barley, triticale, canola, flax, and peas. It works as good as most machines in the area.
