I worked at a plant in Kitchener Ontario last spring called safety-kleen. They re-refine used engine oil, filter it and blend it with new additives to resell. Some wal-mart oil says packaged at or refined by safety-kleen. I dont know if it the same place or how it compares with new oil but this could be why its cheaper?

Safety Kleen recycles oil. Oil never wears out, only the additive. I've been using the 30 buck a pail for about 4 years now in everything - no engine jobs yet. Ever look at the bottom of a pail of oil from UFA or ESSO etc and see the sludge at the bottom, Wal-mart cheapy oil is actually clean to start with. I have wondered about this stuff whether it's good or not too, but, I think affording to change the oil more often is better than any more expensive oil!!
Have a look at:

UFA, New Holland & John Deere oil all come on pallets with IOL stamped on them Imperial Oil Limited. There is a difference in the additives though I am told. CaseIH oil comes from the USA I used to sell NH oil and we had some guys bring oil back because the color was quite different from the pail to the jug.
