    chaff spreaders

WEnt to an airdrill this spring, now I have to get a chaff spreader for my MF 860. Any comments as to which ones are better or ones to watch out for.

My neighbor has an 860 with a blower mounted up by the hopper, pipe goes down to the box under the sieves and blows the chaff out each side. So simple and effective. Don't know who makes it, but I'm sure somebody around here does.

The brand name is REM, and they are a good chaff spreader. Just use an airdeeder fan to blow chaff to the sides. Very simple, no hydraulics or orbit motors. I had one on an 8820, was very happy with the spread.

If you are interested in some help in paying for that chaff spreader, you might be interested in completing an environmental farm plan (if you are in Alberta). By completing the program you can access funds from the Canada-Alberta Farm Stewardship Program. It's a cost/share program where you buy first and then get reimbursed, but it covers all kinds of improvements that are related to good stewardship like fencing riparian areas, shelterbelts, proper fuel storage, portable wind breaks to get cows out on the pasture for an extended period during the winter, chaff savers, GPS, all kinds of things. There are facilitators across the province who can tell you more about the program. The funds for such things are available until March 2008 and this is part of a national endeavor. It's worth a look!
