has anyone got experience using a stripper head on short crops like lentils or peas on land with a few rocks? how do they compare to a honeybee.

I dont know about a honeybee but they SUCK in lodged wheat. I used one last fall and lodged into the crop it picked up good, away from the crop left 35% (buddy from AFSC did a count over beers for me). The rocktrap was packed with mud, I had to use a prybar to clean it out after 20 acres. I only used it for the last 40 acres, and the conditions where horrible but if the ground is wet I wouldnt consider one for a minute. Plus you still have to deal with the residue in the spring.
I think a rakeup pickup with coulters and screen on the back of the header to let dirt/dust out would work much better.
Good luck
