    swather Massey 220XL or 9220

I am growing oats instead of durum
and canola this year. I think it is time to retire the 400 Versatile.

Looking at Massey swathers for the first time, are the 9220's a big improvement over the 220's?

Will have about 1000 acres to swath
    plus some custom work maybe.

Minister Danyluk will have several of these rural/urban conflicts on his plate to deal with before long. There has got to be a better way to spend tax dollars than to continually scrap with neighbouring municipalities.

The 9220's are a huge improvement over the 220. We still run a 220, they cut excellent, but just don't have all the bells and whistles that the 9220's have. One thing to note if you are looking at any 220's be sure to ask if they have the Schumacher knife drive on. If not I wouldn't take it home without it.

P.S If you are buying a 26ft then the Massey knife drive was ok, it was the 30ft's that gave trouble.

The only advantage to the 9220's is cab, comfort, etc. The 9220's came with the Ago 5000 series header, a real bonus. If you look at the 220xl starting I believe in 02 they also have the Ago header.

We had 220xx last year went to 9420 what a improvement, still best swather for canola because of the huge throat, lays a nice swath for combining canola.
machine again is a huge difference.

I use a '97 220. Great machine for canola, and has very high clearance and is very light in weight (Though this means it is also "lightly built). If you replace all the roller bearings everyyear and maintain the tarps, you can easily handle 1000-1500 acres of canola. Most of my problems have been due to improper maintenance on the rollers. Make sure your header has the updated knife drive on it ( not the old horizontal drive). The new 9220 looks very heavy, and may not be as good in the mud as the 220, though the header looks to be similar. I'd rather spend 25-45k on a 220XL than 100k on a 9220- both do the same job, and your not dealing with too many acres.

I might be able to get a 2004 9220 for around $ 55 000.00 which I think is reasonably priced.

            30 foot,500 hrs.
