Sask Pulse Growers New Directors Acclaimed in Election Process.

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Election Closes due to Acclamation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Friday, December 2, 2011

The Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) election came to a close today, as one of the candidates has withdrawn their name.

Cynthia Edwards, one of four candidates running for three open positions on the SPG Board pulled out of the campaign on November 30th. As a result, the remaining three candidates will win seats on the SPG Board by acclamation.

In January 2012, SPG will welcome Shawn Buhr of Lucky Lake, Jim Moen of Cabri, and Bert Vandenberg of Saskatoon to the Board of Directors.

Shawn and his family have produced pulses on their 6,400 acre farm for nearly 20 years, making up 20-40% of their rotation. Shawn has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan (U of S). Shawn sat on the SPG Board from 1998 to 2004, and was Chairman in 2003 and 2004.

Jim Moen and his family have farmed in the Cabri area for almost 20 years on their 3,200 acre farm, where pulses make up 40% of their rotation. Jim has a degree in Agriculture and is a member of the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists. He sat on the SPG Board from 2002 to 2007, and was Chairman in 2007.

The third candidate, Dr. Bert Vandenberg, has been a pulse crop breeder at the University of Saskatchewan's Crop Development Centre since 1991. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, a Masters in Crop Science, and a PhD in Lentil Genetics and Plant Breeding. He currently acts as an advisor to many pulse producers and pulse crop organizations.

SPG looks forward to the wealth of knowledge these three will bring to the Board table. The three candidates will assume responsibility on the Board following the Annual General Meeting on January 9, 2012, which is held in conjunction with Pulse Days 2012.

SPG represents over 18,000 pulse crop producers in Saskatchewan. Accountable to growers and funded through a mandatory, non-refundable check-off, SPG has a producer-elected Board of Directors comprised of seven pulse growers. A Director's term is three years in length. For more information about Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, please visit www.saskpulse.com.
