Ministers Fast and Ritz Deeply Disappointed with U.S. Decision to Appeal Ruling on Country of Origin Labelling

November 28, 2014 - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, and the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, issued the following statement on today’s decision by the U.S. to appeal the WTO compliance panel’s latest decision on the U.S. Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) policy:

“Canada is deeply disappointed with the U.S. decision to appeal the WTO ruling on COOL.

“Canada fully expected the United States to live up to its international trade obligations and comply with the WTO ruling, which reaffirms Canada’s long-standing view that the revised U.S. COOL measure is blatantly protectionist and fails to comply with the WTO’s original ruling against it.

“With this delay, the United States is yet again preventing both of our countries from enjoying the benefits of freer and more open trade and is hurting farmers, ranchers and workers in the United States and Canada.
“We are confident that the WTO Appellate Body in the compliance process will uphold the principal finding of the report: that the amended U.S. COOL measure discriminates against Canadian livestock. That finding marks another clear victory for Canada and recognizes the integrated nature of the North American supply chain.

“Our government will always stand with our farmers and ranchers, and we will take whatever steps may be necessary, including retaliation, to achieve a fair resolution.”

If these two "brilliant" cabinet ministers had any guts at all they would use "proposed retaliatory measures" IMMEDIATELY and quit BS..ing us. They are such chickenshits it almost makes you puke.

They should have done that after the first ruling.

Call it what you want. I call it incompetence.

Let me be clear we stand with our farmers and ranchers. Is anyone else getting a little tired of this statement. Just asking.

They either live in a state of perpetual deep disappointment or they haven't figured out (even though the rest of the world has) that the us doesn't give a fart what the wto, canada or anybody else says. Industry leaders seem to live in the same alternate universe as these two bozos.

These two likely step on rakes, walk into glass doors and spend a lot of time squinting. It sounds like nobody in Agriculture or International Trade had any idea the Americans would appeal. I guess in some places if your CPC it doesn't matter how stupid you are, you'll get elected.

We need the prime minister to say enough is enough. Too fearful of retaliation? Heck, we've got possibly the most anti-Canadian president in memory. We need a different president, but the choices look as bad. Hillary might be worse on trade. Trade war could hurt us worse, but this makes the WTO worth asswipe. Turning down the energy tap maybe? Maybe everyone is walking on eggshells until Keystone is signed. Good Luck!

What gutless naive suckers Canadian politicians are.

And current "leadership" being seen as the lesser of other evils is really no compliment.

The US has the right to appeal the WTO compliance panel ruling that supported the Canadian position.
These 2 ministers are responsible for the positive progress made on this file, and they rightly made a statement expressing the disappointment in the US.
Yet you still continue to condemn/criticize the Canadian ministers.
Left shaking my head...no pun intended.

Mb I voted for the conservatives and I am saying it's time for Ritz to go out to pasture. No pun intended.

Do you really think they care? Their two terms are up which means their eligible for pension and some will get board seats. The cynic in me says most are SELF SERVING....

How often do you hear your Con MP?
