Well I said I thought it was going to be back to normal and except for the geese damage it sure is.
Harvesting peas on ground we burnt black in spring are doing very very good. There was no burn off except what was done last fall desiccation. They were seeded early may into black ground and never looked back. They were sprayed once app of fungicide and in crop was Viper. I might change the viper app to something else. They were fertilized with just a base amount of S15 and inoculated with FNA liquid pea that's it. Reglone was done July 1 and they had three inches rain on them since Reglone. They did drop a bit but still a foot of product to take, but header is running just above ground. They were Meadow.
Now we are in that sweet spot that I consider back to normal. We were in the Area that was Flood zone for some 10 years so ground water did help when their was a week of lower precipitation. Some say I'm wrong saying were back to normal weather but for us on the east side of Sask I would have to say we are. Finally its good to be back.
Now I know others have not had perfect weather like the last 10 and yields are down or poor or half what they use to be. I feel bad when a area is hit by things they cant control.
All I have tried to point out is all the planning in the world and new tec. is useless if mother nature decides to F$%k with you.
Western Canada’s pea harvest has begun and yields appear to be down, according to a crop management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says a post on agcanada.com.
“Once farmers cut into the peas they began finding yields maybe half of what they typically expected,†said Shannon Friesen.
Excess dryness in the early summer seems to have taken its toll.
“So even though things look OK at first, it seems we maybe didn’t get the timely rains (we needed) to fill some of those pods. So we’re not really having as much yield as we would have hoped.â€
I have said all summer Peas are the one crop that has had the most issues with low precipitation.
Selling off the combine is probably not good unless you have contracted well over 9.
I remember how stressful harvesting flooded out peas and how angry you get at the shitty results. Be careful harvesting its just a crop and we all live to farm another day.
If you have wildlife damage phone a claim in they do a good job and cover the cost of loss.
