    Maple Peas??

    How big of a market is there for Maple Peas? Are they used for bird feed like Canary Seed?

    Jagfarms;

    Typically this is a contracted crop... that is not allowed into the feed pea market because of the high tanin in these peas...

    Prices are usually quite good though... yield is not as good and standability substandard to new peas.

      Beware that most livestock producers do not want to deal with Maples. Appearently there is a flavor factor or something that makes them un-desirable.

        High tannins make them sour to a pig (similar to desi chick peas). Pigs are like people. They like a nice sweet tasting pea.

          Just as a note, fababeans had similar problems but the new white seeded varieties are much more palitable to pigs. A crop to watch for in the future.

            Pigeons love them. They will pick out all the maple peas before they touch the wheat or corn or whatever else in in the mix. Not sure how much influence that has on the market though
