    canaryseed

Can anyone give me an update on the hairless canaryseed, I believe CDC Maria. There was big hype when it was released but have heard little since.

Individuals growing CDC Maria in Northeast Alberta that I have had contact with seem satisfied with the variety and don't feel its really all that different from conventional material. They appreciate the hairless nature of it as you might expect. They do find that the hairs did cause there to be increased volume when harvesting the older varieites as compared to CDC Maria. This gives the impression of lower bushel yields with CDC Maria if actual weight is not taken into account. Fortunately the canaryseed business seems to work on the pd and not the bushel. Clients have not reported premiums for CDC Maria and I have not heard of any unique uses being developed for the material although the potential is there. Therefore the variety seems to be grown because it is easier to live with from an itch perspective rather than the variety offering a premium in the marketplace.

the hairless canaryseed is almost itchless,we grew it 2 years ago and really liked it,the yield was good and a very tough variety,no premium so

I am very interested in finding out if there are yeild diferences as well. I live in the eastern side of Saskatchewan near highway 16. According to Sask Ag and Foods, Sask Mgt Plus program, pounds per acre in my area were 1208 Keet and 953 CDC Maria LBS / acre. It was a small sample size so I wonder if it is untrue to believe it or not.

We tested several canaryseed lines at Edmonton over the past three years, and there was always a yield decrease for CDC Maria of approx 10-15%.

Was the yeild decrease in POUNDS per acre or bushels (since we know that Maria has a heavier bushel weight than other varieties of canary seed as it is hull-less).
