U.S. pea seeding intentions

Does anyone know the US farmers plan with respect to seeding field peas? I couldn't find anything on the latest report. Does one assume acres will be up, similar to soybeans (cheap inputs).

Is this the same for Canada? G****vine tells me acres will be down in Central Alberta if certified seed sales are any indication.

With the LDP at about 65 bucks US, the farmers I talked to were thinking acres would be switching from canola to peas, but more so in the northern states - non-soybean areas.

I'm pretty sure US pea acres are going to be up substantially. However, the US also has an enormous capacity to use peas for livestock feed. There may be a time lag of a year or two before local demand catches up to production, but I think in the long run US pea production will not have a negative impact on prices. They might, in the short run!

Right now it looks like field pea seedings in the United States will go from 808,000 acres last year to around 1.1 million this year. A lot of the increase will likely be in yellows because those ended up being in short supply this year.

The growth in seedings has the USDA and other researchers working hard at new uses for peas, ongoing livestock trials, and publicizing feeding results to livestock organizations. The kind of work we should have been doing more of in Canada these many years.
