New Crop Pea Forward Contracts $5.00

Peas pencil in quite nicely with $5.00 per bushel. Has anyone booked some prodution for next year. If so, what percentage or how many bushels per acre are you booking?

I might contract 10 bushels per acre and then see what happens after harvest. It is tempting to book more, but it looks like pea prices might hold for next year.

I really wish there was more information out there for makeing marketing decisions on crops like peas.

Is that for edible, yellows, where is it at?
If I could get 5.00 for yellow edibles #2 or better picked up I would do 1/2 production. (20 x 5 = 100 x 1200 = 120,000 off combine)

$5.00 for yellow edibles. Agricore United is triggering these in Southwest Sasktatchewan today (new crop).

Actually SWP had $5.00 two weeks ago,but I thought about giving it awhile and maybe squeezing another 15 cents to pay for trucking.

Sure alot better than $3.85 forward price of a year ago.

Lakenheath, I asked this some time ago, but if you could tell me again. What would you recommend Greens or Yellows?? Also what variety's in each color?

I ask this because following these topics, you seem to have a sharp pencil.

I've never grown peas before, and I picked up some more acres that are ready for peas, and thought being I had not bought any N for this land that peas might be a good option.

I have heard that new crop prices could as high as 5.50 before seeding in the Regina area.The info I was using didn't suggest signing any just yet but making sure seed supply was secured.

I have always grown yellows. With greens you run into more grading issues. It is very easy to grow edible yellows and they seem to have higher yielding varieties.

As far as varities go. I tend to lean towards smaller seed size (costs less to seed them), good harvestibility (standibility), earlier maturing and of course the variety must have good yield.

The newer varieties have most of these traites. Of course you might sacrifice one trait for another picking varieties.

When we first started growing peas we grew Deltas. They yielded well, but did not stand up very good on a wet year (and do not have powderey mildew tolerence). We then switched to Minuet (powedery resistent, smaller seed, higher yielding, but still fell down on a wet year). Last year we grew Midas (very early yeilding variety and they stood up great, so the yield is not rated as high as the top varieties). This year we are growing Goldens (we'll see what happens).

The bottom line with peas is to make sure you have a good plant population, you innoculate correctly (very important) and weed control (also very important). Hope for rain and the least of you concerns will be what variety (assuming you choose a newer one) you choose.

Also, growing peas got cheaper this year. Poast Ultra is going down 25% in price. I know a lost of guys moving away from Odyssey and just using Pursuit and Poast or Assure (can save about $6.00 and acre assuming you go full rate on either option).

We grew "Golden" peas last year and I really like their upright stand compared to Mozart which we have been growing. Mozart and Golden fields side by side and header could be raised quite a bit on Golden side.

i heard last week in battleford that targets were getting picked off for $5.25/bu. i'm tempted to start there or $5.50/bu but what's going to cause the price to drop off? canola acres are still going to be big, spring wheat futures are holding strong and the board keeps coming out with comments on big premiums for malt barley and durum.

my advisor has been prettty good on peas this year; we wanted to sell them all in fall at $4/bu but thankfully still have 40% left and it looks like we'll get $6/bu.

I graphed out (from 1991 to 2007) historical data on yellow field peas. The data I used was seeded acres, production, average yield (in our RM's), average price and carry-in and carry-out stocks.

I graphed price in relation to overall production 1991 to 2006, seeded acres to production 1991 to 2006 and price to area yield 1991 to 2006. The rest of the data I put in column from 1991 to 2007 for quick reference.

The data is very interesting. The average price from 1991 is $4.57 a bushel. Looking at the data going into 2007 (govnt. predicting a 5% drop in acres) tells me that looking in as much now for $5.00 is a very good idea.
