    Western Canadian Pea Production

Anyone been hearing some early harvested pea yields/potential yields for remaining crop. Benson & Quinn/GMS come out with their UGG elevator based survey of just over 2 MMT for western Canada. Most others seem to be in the 2.6 to 2.8 MMT range (2.9 last year). Yields are way down in all cases given the 16 % increase in 2001 pea acreage versus 2000 (3.6 mln acres this year versus 3.1 last.

A crop of under 2.5 mln acres will have major implications given what likely will be good fall movement on edible peas prior to the availability of new crop Indian and Australian pulse crops. There is also likely some European feed pea business being done but the major change in the coming year will be the need to put a lot more feed peas in domestic rations as an energy source in the face of a tight local feed grain situation.

    Others thoughts.

While I'm at it, I may as well include a question on greens. My assumption is there is going to be a lot of bleached greens (mainly sun but likey some rain across central SK.). I should make sure I have a handle on the demand side but I see potential for high quality greens to go to a premium to yellows. Others thoughts?
