I have a Dutch neighbor and he tells me good land in Holland routinely sells for $100,000/acre. Now is it any wonder that Dutch farmers are buying up land here? Also, if the farmer emmigrates to Canada , and buys farm land he gets a break on his taxes! They also get some sort of special deal on moving expenses! Talk about government supporting their farmers!
So why is it that certain parts of western Canada have such cheap land? Well the Dutch farmers expect a certain amount of amenities and don't want to be out in the sticks...and why should they...they have the cash to buy wherever. So while we think $2000/$3000 per acre is outrageous they think it is a great bargain.
Maybe this is where the next generation of farmers will come from as our own population seems to be leaving. And maybe that's a good thing as they are very industrious people and are very good farmers.
